In broad terms, sustainability is an almost-inarguable objective. But how do we put it into practice? Varying time horizons, implementation costs, winners and losers, specific targets, paths and actions, regulations, and priorities become an overwhelming web of variables to untangle. Some form of this complex challenge faces every business, family, and government across our planet. Avoiding this challenge is likely to be catastrophic.
Through SM-690 Capstone, our team was given the opportunity to develop a Sustainability Management Plan for the municipality of West Orange, NJ. This presentation will describe the teamwork, plan development process, presentation development, and impacts of our capstone.
Stanley Goodman, ENV SP, is a 2021 graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology, earning an MS in Sustainability Management. He also holds a BS in Economics from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He worked primarily in manufacturing, from machine repair and design to logistics, MRP implementation, and Divisional VP of Operations. He continues to engage in community activities, believing that “interested people are interesting.
Nazrin Akther is an Engineer at kW Engineering, working on commercial and multifamily energy efficiency, energy measurement and verification, and clean heat projects around NYC. Nazrin completed her undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and graduate degree in Sustainability Management at Stevens Institute of Technology. Nazrin volunteers for UNA USA NNJ and various other organizations like Islamic Relief USA in her free time.
