The purpose of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is to promote international educational and cultural exchange to develop mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and other countries. The U.S. Department of State administers the Exchange Visitor Program and assigns certain cultural and educational institutions, such as Stevens, as sponsors to administer its program. Please visit the U.S. Department of State BridgeUSA website to learn more. Designated International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) staff members, known as Responsible Officers or Alternate Responsible Officers (ROs/AROs), serve as representatives to help administer the Exchange Visitor Program for Stevens. They are responsible for all J-1 Student, Student Intern, Scholar, and Professor related immigration documents and advisement on the Form DS-2019, employment authorization, maintenance of status, and international travel.
Under U.S. law, J-1 Exchange Visitors are responsible for abiding by the rules and regulations governing their J-1 Exchange Visitor status. ISSS will assist all J-1 Exchange Visitors in understanding these rules and regulations, but J-1 Exchange Visitors are ultimately responsible to maintain proper J-1 Exchange Visitor status for their category. For further details please visit the ISSS Rules and Responsibilities for Maintaining J-1 Scholar/Professor Status webpage.
