The purpose of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is to promote international educational and cultural exchange in order to develop mutual understanding between the people of the US and other countries. The US Department of State administers the Exchange Visitor Program, and it assigns certain cultural and educational institutions, such as Stevens, as sponsors to administer its program. Designated ISSS staff members serve as representatives, known as Responsible Officers or Alternate Responsible Officers (RO/ARO), and they help administer the exchange visitor program for Stevens

The International Student and Scholar Services office is responsible for all student and scholar related immigration documents and advisement on DS-2019's, employment authorization, maintenance of status and international travel.

When making a sponsorship request for an initial J-1 exchange visitor (EV), please keep in mind that the visa application process in many countries can take at least 4-6 weeks. To ensure that the exchange visitor arrives at Stevens by the program start date, and to avoid duplicative work and excessive shipping costs, the ISSS strongly recommends that all requests for sponsorship be made as early as possible, but no later than at least three months before the expected program start date.
