Civic Engagement Initiatives

The Office of Undergraduate Student Life at Stevens is committed to the mission of enriching learning through preparing students to be active global citizens by engaging them in meaningful service activities that enhance the quality of life for the local, national, and international communities, in addition to the impact that it has on them. We facilitate opportunities for students to foster, support, and sustain better relationships amongst community members encouraging and supporting students to become active, responsible, and just members of the community and neighborhoods in which they live. Through these opportunities students are challenged to critically examine the role their service plays in cultivating personal development and social change.

Stevens students volunteering at The Hoboken Shelter for the homelessLocal and Global Connections

Local connections include one-time and regular service programs that meet self-identified community needs. We serve as a point of access for community partners wishing to engage the Stevens student body in local service initiatives. Our partnership with the Global Service Initiative program through Delta Upsilon Fraternity allows us to offer a one-time global service immersion program each year for students.

Featured Events & Programs

Stevens Global Service Initiative

Each spring a select group of students embark on a global service initiative to Jamaica wherein they engage in global service immersed in the Jamaican culture. They spend the week serving alongside day laborers and community partners working to improve the conditions of the schools in Negril and Treasure Beach. At night the students reflect on their experiences through curriculum rooted in social justice.

Alternative Spring Break

These week-long service trips are available to students over extended break periods. During spring break each year, a group of our students engage in a Habitat for Humanity build somewhere within the United States in an area in need of service. This trip enables students to dedicate their break to making a difference, while learning about themselves, their classmates, and the pressing needs of our communities within the country.

Freshman Service Day

Over 100 new students engage in a half-day community service opportunity serving one of our many Hoboken partners. This gives our newest students a taste of what it is like to be a Stevens student!

Volunteer Expo

Each fall the Office of Undergraduate Student Life partners with local community partners to connect our students with volunteer based organizations. This event helps them learn more about the mission of the agency/organization and creates partnerships for them to be able to volunteer or serve with the invited organizations.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

For 30 years, Stevens' students, staff, faculty and alumni have volunteered to inflate, manage, and fly balloons in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. We have over 100 volunteers participate in this annual tradition that is televised around the world.
