Being First Gen means to me that I am creating a path for myself to succeed and finding new opportunities on my own with Stevens here to support me every step of the way.
At Stevens, a first-generation college student is someone whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) have not graduated from a four-year college or university. Students who self-identify as limited income may receive a Pell Grant or funding through New Jersey’s EOF program, but any student interested in these resources is welcome to participate in the FLI Network.
Stevens is committed to providing a supportive campus environment for first-generation and/or limited income (FLI) students’ education beyond academics through involvement in educational social activities that are engaging and informative. A collaboration between multiple offices and campus leaders at Stevens, the FLI Network is the programatic hub for educational events and opportunities for first-generation and/or limited income students. All FLI students at Stevens are encouraged to participate in the following opportunities provided and share their pride to be FLI Ducks!

Being First Gen means I don’t let my circumstances determine my future. I’m doing something no one in my family has done before, and I will bring positive changes to my community and the world.
I am proud to be First Gen because one day I will be able to give back to my parents for all the sacrifices they made. I'm happy to be an example for my brother and make my family proud.
Being First Gen means having to figure out college on your own until you find your support system. Looking back, my advice is: find your supporters who want to see you succeed and ask for help!
I realize how little I understood of the overall college experience - how many resources were available and how important extracurriculars are. Now as a professor I discuss these topics with students.…
I’m proud to be a first-gen grad because it’s truly a family accomplishment. My parents’ sacrifices have opened the door to me having a life of fulfillment and endless opportunities.
