Subject: Physical Education (PE) Classes Cancelled for Fall 2020 semester
Social distancing requirements and precautions enacted to promote the health and safety of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted how Stevens can provide Physical Education (PE) classes. At this time, Stevens has made the difficult decision to cancel Physical Education classes for the Fall 2020 semester and will waive the PE requirement for students graduating in December 2020 and May 2021. A decision about Spring 2021 PE classes will be made in mid-October. Students who are currently enrolled for PE classes will be withdrawn from those classes by the Registrar’s Office. The Registrar’s Office will follow up early in the fall semester with additional details on the PE requirement waiver process.
When students return for the Fall 2020 semester, Stevens will be following the NCAA’s COVID-19 guidance, including the NCAA Three Phases for Resocialization of Collegiate Sport, as described in the NCAA Core Principles of Resocialization. Based on this guidance, when Stevens reaches NCAA Reopening Phase 3, we may be able to reopen the pool, gym, fitness center and other areas of the Schaefer Athletic Center to students while maintaining reduced density and social distancing based on health and safety guidance at that time.
We understand that physical activity is important for the health and well-being of our students. To that end, staff in the Office of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation will be developing a series of socially-distanced mostly outdoor activities that will provide an opportunity for physical activity throughout the Fall semester. More information will be provided in late August. In the meantime, if you have any questions about our plans for outdoor recreation programs, please contact Russ Rogers, Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation at [email protected].
