Subject: Classroom Seating Assignments and Support for the First Day of Classes

We are pleased to inform you that all students enrolled in on-campus course sections for the fall 2020 semester received an email today (Friday, August 28), listing their classroom seat assignments.

To maintain proper distancing and to reduce density on campus, it is imperative that all students comply with these seating instructions. Seating charts will be posted in each classroom to help students find their color-coded, numbered seats. For reference, seating charts for all classrooms are available on our intranet page.

Students who requested recent schedule changes may not see the adjustment reflected in their seating assignments yet; those students, and students whose course requests are still under review, will receive updated seating information by Monday, August 31. If you have questions about a seating assignment, please email the Office of the Registrar at [email protected].

Over the weekend, all faculty members who are teaching hybrid courses will receive a list of which students are attending in person and which will be online. In the next few weeks, faculty will be able to view assigned seats and a class roster denoting in-person and remote participation for StevensFlex courses in Canvas. We are working on implementing this with Information Technology and look forward to providing an update soon.

In preparation for StevensFlex courses next week, please refer to the following classroom management and technology reminders:

  • Please avoid moving chairs around in classrooms. In addition, we request that all students refrain from using empty classrooms as study spaces. Stevens is creating study spaces, both indoors and outdoors, including in the library and tents on campus. More information will be available soon on these locations.
  • In addition to seating charts, each classroom will be equipped with disinfectant wipes, and hand sanitizing stations will be available throughout campus. Faculty and students should wipe down their spaces prior to the start of each class.
  • Technical support will be available for all instructors. The phone number and email address for Information Technology will be displayed on the Solstice splash screen when the system is turned on. Additionally, IT staff members will be stationed in academic buildings during the first month of classes to provide support.

Finally, all courses will be held synchronously, according to the schedule provided by the Office of the Registrar. Additionally, attendance tracking will be required. Attendance tracking is a Federal Title IV financial aid requirement and is very important for contact tracing in on-campus courses.

Thank you for your attention to these matters. We wish you a successful start to the fall semester.
