Subject: Returning to Campus for Spring 2022

Stevens is planning for an in-person spring semester with classes beginning on January 18, 2022. We will continue to monitor local conditions and emerging public health guidance and will keep our community informed of the evolving situation.

Guidelines for Safe Travel
Anyone traveling on public transportation (plane, train, bus, etc.) should take all recommended precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Please pay special attention to State Department, CDC and local guidelines. Specifically, travelers are urged to wear a mask over the nose and mouth while traveling, follow all requirements for testing and self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms after travel. Individuals who have been exposed to COVID-19, who are sick, who test positive for COVID-19 or who are awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test should not travel.

Testing Upon Your Return to Campus
All students, faculty and staff should test for COVID-19 as soon as they return to campus for the first time in Spring 2022. COVID-19 testing upon return is required for all residential students and live-in residential staff, in-season student-athletes and coaches, Student Health Services staff and any individuals who are exempt from Stevens’ vaccination requirement. All other students, faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to test.

How to Get Tested at Stevens

  • Residential students. Students living in Stevens housing, which includes fraternity and sorority housing, the Lore-El Center, 1036 Park and Stevens Leased Housing, will have a rapid at-home test kit placed in their room or apartment over the Winter Break. This rapid at-home test will have clear instructions for use. Every residential student must self-administer this at-home test immediately upon arrival to Stevens Housing in January. Parents and friends who transport students to school should wait for the test result before departing campus. Should a student test positive for COVID-19, the student should depart campus immediately for isolation at home unless it is not possible and call Student Health Services at 201-216-5678. Students who test positive and are unable to return home due to unforeseen circumstances for the isolation period will receive further guidance from Student Health Services. Negative results do not need to be reported.
  • Students who do not live in Stevens housing. Students who do not reside in Stevens housing are strongly encouraged to either pick up and self-administer a free, rapid at-home testing kit beginning on January 4th from Student Health Services during regular business hours as soon as they return to campus, or schedule an appointment for a free, on-campus rapid test administered by Bergen New Bridge Medical Center (BNBMC). BNBMC will offer rapid tests on Friday, January 14th and Monday, January 17th from 10 am - 2 pm in the Corcoran Room on the 1st floor of Gateway North. A registration link for BNBMC rapid testing will be provided in early January. Those students who remain on-campus over the Winter Break may pick up a rapid at-home test kit from Student Health Services on January 4th. Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 must immediately self-isolate and call Student Health Services at 201-216-5678.
  • Faculty and staff. Faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to either pick up and self-administer a free, rapid at-home testing kit beginning on January 10th from Human Resources during regular business hours as soon as they return to campus, or schedule an appointment for a free, on-campus rapid test administered by Bergen New Bridge Medical Center (BNBMC). BNBMC will offer rapid tests on Friday, January 14th and Monday, January 17th from 10 am - 2 pm in the Corcoran Room on the 1st floor of Gateway North. A registration link for BNBMC rapid testing will be provided in early January. Those employees and students who remain on-campus over the Winter Break may pick up a rapid at-home test kit on January 4th. Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 must immediately self-isolate and call Student Health Services at 201-216-5678.
  • Individuals exempt from Stevens’ vaccination requirement. All those who received an exemption to Stevens’ vaccine requirement for Fall 2021 are required to renew their exemption before the Spring 2022 term. Exempt students, faculty and staff have many options for a required test before returning to campus. They may exercise the option to use a rapid at-home test kit provided by Stevens (see details above), take a rapid test offered by BNBMC on January 14th or 17th (see details above) or may participate in the regular weekly testing for exempt individuals which resumes on January 5, 2022. Exempt individuals are required to submit a negative COVID-19 test result onlinebefore returning to housing, classes, or offices. Exempt individuals who participate in on-campus testing through BNBMC do not need to submit documentation of their test result online. Documentation of a negative at-home test result will be accepted through the online submission process by submission of a photograph of the resulted test next to your Stevens ID card.

How to Get Tested Off-Campus
Students, faculty and staff may choose to take a test at a location of their choosing before returning to campus. All are encouraged to take advantage of the free at-home COVID test kit for New Jersey residents, use an at-home test (available at some pharmacies) or make an appointment at a local testing site in Hoboken or Jersey City.

Spring 2022 Arrival for Residential Students
Stevens residential facilities reopen beginning on Friday, January 14, 2022. Students returning for the Spring 2022 semester may arrive anytime between January 14th and January 17th with the exception of students who are approved for an early arrival by the Office of Residential and Dining Services. Students returning to Stevens Housing for the spring semester must sign up for a move-in time through the myStevens Housing and Dining portal and must plan to arrive on their scheduled move-in date and time. Spring 2022 meal plans begin on Friday, January 14th.

Free, rapid at-home COVID-19 test kits will be left in each student’s room or apartment and must be self-administered immediately upon arrival to campus. Positive tests must immediately be reported to Student Health Services at 201-216-5678; students should plan to return home for the isolation period right after learning of their positive result. Parents and friends who transport students to school should wait for the test result before departing campus. Students who test positive and are unable to return home for the isolation period will receive further guidance from Student Health Services.

Get Boosted During Winter Break
Stevens requires that all faculty, staff and students receive the booster vaccine as soon as they are eligible and no later than March 31, 2022. All members of the community are urged to get boosted during the winter break. Documentation of the booster vaccine must be submitted through Workday by following these instructions for students and for employees.

We wish you a restful, safe and healthy Winter Break.
