Subject: Updates to Stevens' Indoor Masking Policy

In response to updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and lower rates of COVID-19 infection locally and in our campus community, Stevens is updating its indoor masking policy. We thank the many members of our community who responded to the masking survey; the masking survey data in addition to conversations with representatives from the faculty, staff and student body were used to inform this decision.

Effective this Monday, April 4, 2022, masking indoors will be optional in campus facilities at times when physical distance can be maintained. Masking will be optional in indoor settings such as:

  • Residence hall rooms and communal spaces
  • Office spaces
  • Meetings and events involving small groups of people
  • Schaefer Athletic Center

Masking will continue to be required of all members of the community during classes and in all indoor campus facilities, shuttles, and events at which physical distance cannot be maintained. Examples of settings where masking will continue to be required for all individuals include:

  • Classes and instructional settings
  • Crowded indoor events including events in DeBaun Auditorium, indoor events during Admitted Student Weekend, Innovation Expo, and Commencement
  • Student Health Services
  • The Stevens Shuttle

Any individual who would like to continue wearing a mask in any setting is welcome to do so at any time. No health status or other assumptions should be made about anyone who continues to wear a mask, nor should anyone who continues to wear a mask be pressured to remove their mask in any setting.

We will continue to monitor CDC guidelines and consult with our local health officials as the pandemic evolves. Should circumstances require a reconsideration of this or any other policy, we reserve the ability to make changes to support the health and wellbeing of the Stevens community.
