If you have been
sexually assaulted, you have several options on places to go for
help and people to speak to for support. You have the right to
speak with an advocate, file a police report, and/or go the hospital
for an exam and treatment. You may choose to do just one of those
things, or you may want to do all three. Most important is that
whatever you decide to do – it is your decision and no one else’s.
However,
there are people who you can talk to about the assault and
about the decisions you are facing.
Contacting an
On-Campus Resource
-
Maggie Cunning, the Campus Nurse,
is at the Student Health Center on the 6th floor of the Howe
Center and has a background in Womens' Health. Nurse Cunning
is available to assist you with your experience. She can be
reached during the day at x8106 or x5678 between the hours
of 9:00am - 4:00pm. In an effort to maintain strict
confidentiality, you do not have to tell the Health Center
Receptionist the reason for your desire to speak to the nurse.
Simply state that you wish to speak to the nurse about a
personal matter.
-
Know that there is also an
administrator on-call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a
week. In the case of such an emergency, please call the Center
Desk at x5105 so that Campus Police can reach out to the
administrator on-call.
-
Consider speaking to a psychologist
with the Counseling Center. Sexual assault is a traumatic
experience whether it happened just recently or if it happened
years ago and it is usually helpful for a survivor to talk
through their experience and feelings. You may make an
appointment by either calling x5177 or by stopping into the
Student Health and Counseling Center.
- If you would
like to file a police report, please call Campus Police at
x5105.

Seeking Medical
Attention:
While it is your
decision on how to respond, it is recommended that you seek medical
attention for the following reasons:
- You can choose to
receive emergency contraception in an effort to prevent
pregnancy.
- You can receive a
treatment of antibiotics that may be helpful in fighting off STD
infection.
- Evidence will be
collected during an exam that could be used in court should you
decide to pursue charges. Even if you don’t want to pursue
charges at the time of the exam, the collected evidence will be
stored for a certain amount of time in case you change your
mind.
If you think you may
or are planning to seek medical attention, you may want to follow
the following suggestions in order for the exam to be most
effective;
- Don’t shower, bath,
douche, eat, drink, smoke, or urinate if at all possible, as
evidence may be destroyed.
- If you are not
wearing the clothes that you were wearing when you were
assaulted, bring them with you in a bag.
- If you think that you
were drugged, tell the nurse so that they can test for it.
Christ Hospital at
176 Palisade Avenue in Jersey City is the hospital in Hudson County
that handles sexual assault cases and exams. They can also be
reached at (201) 795 – 8200. They have specially trained nurses and
doctors who know how to conduct the necessary forensic exam while
supporting the survivor. If you do want to seek medical attention,
know that you never have to go to the hospital alone…there is a
staff person who will be able to accompany you.
