Svetlana Sukhishvili, Associate Professor, Chemistry
Professor Sukhishvili is an expert in polymer chemistry. Her work is supported by government and industrial grants, and she holds a number of patents for chemical processes which she has discovered. One of her current research projects involves new types of drug delivery. Smart capsules made of layers of polymers can deliver drugs in a controlled way depending on upon external conditions such as temperature or degree of acidity.
You can meet Professor Sukhishvili in the special freshman seminar on chemistry and biology, where she and other chemistry and chemical biology faculty members describe connections between their research and what you are learning in your regular first year chemistry course. If you are motivated, there are opportunities to work on your own projects with her and other faculty members in their laboratories. Professor Sukhishvili believes that undergraduate education should go beyond classroom teaching, and that independent, project-based, knowledge-integrating activities should be an important part of every student's education.
