Scholars Program

The Scholars Program at Stevens stimulates and encourages talented undergraduate students to apply their engineering and scientific training to design and research. Qualified student scholars, guided by the expertise of a faculty advisor, have the opportunity to work on a project during the academic year and a minimum of two summers. The project may be research, design, or development of a device or system that is original or of patent quality. Many of the students in the Scholars Program present their work at professional seminars and at student meetings of engineering or scientific societies.

Research Projects by Student Scholars

  • Installing the Coastal Monitoring Network
  • Designing a vibration-absorbing mound
  • Studying mechanisms by which cells differentiate into neurons
  • Analyzing sediment transport in Newark Bay
  • Using web-based analysis in creating a textile museum in New Jersey
  • Designing and constructing the ROVER mobile severe-weather monitoring system
  • Computer Vision

Combined Academic Programs
As a Stevens student scholar, you can earn a combined B.E./M.E., B.E./M.S., or B.S./M.S. degree in just four years, at no additional tuition cost, and accelerate your program of study to earn B.A., B.E. or B.S. degree in three years.

Sample Combined Programs

  • B.S. in Computer Science + M.S. in Computer Science
  • B.S. in Physics + M.S. in Mathematics
  • B.E. in Computer Engineering + M.S. in Computer Science
  • B.E. in Environmental Engineering + M.S. in Systems Engineering
  • B.E. in Environmental Engineering + M.S. in Systems Engineering
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering + M.S. in Technology Management
  • B.S. in Math + M.S. in Computer Science
  • B.S. in Business and M.S. in Technology Management

Program Features

  • You will develop a mentor relationship with a member of the Stevens faculty, with whom you will work closely on design or research projects that are timely and relevant.
  • You can earn a combined degree in four years at no additional tuition cost, a shorter path to your Ph.D.
  • Your program of study can be accelerated so that you earn your bachelor’s degree in just three years.
  • You will enroll in special honors courses each year.
  • You will attend lectures and presentations delivered by distinguished professors who are experts in their fields.
  • You can either participate in summer research, which includes a stipend and campus housing (space permitting), or take up to four tuition-free courses each summer.

Program Requirements
Typically, student scholars at Stevens are high achieving students with a strong interest in and dedication to their area of study. Strong candidates are invited by the faculty to apply for the program. Once admitted, Stevens Scholars must maintain a minimum 3.2 GPA at Stevens.

What Students Say
“Participating in the Scholars Program gave me the opportunity to do research the summer after my freshman year, testing sedimentation in Newark Bay. I was able to work hands-on with the equipment and analyze the data. The best part was going out on the boat – right to where the tests were done – and really feeling like part of the team.” -- Nicole Chernowetz, ’04, Civil Engineering Major

“As part of the Scholars Program, I was selected to do research in the Caribbean over the summer. I lived in the Dominican Republic for two months at an environmental lab, working with students from other universities, studying biodiversity and the flora and fauna of the region. We worked with native people who have lived in the jungles for generations; they taught us about the medicinal purposes of the plants. I got to attend seminars and work hands-on with the marine algae, which we brought back to Stevens and studied in the labs here with our mass spectrometer.” -- Kim Clarkin, ’06, Chemical Biology Major

The Faculty Perspective
“In addition to the obvious benefits afforded members of the Scholars Program, the students gradually become integral members of the Stevens research community. They are recognized as among the brightest of the Stevens undergraduate students. The faculty view the Scholars students as capable of immediately contributing to research projects and Scholars are highly regarded as research assistants. The opportunity to work side by side with faculty and graduate students in world-class laboratories has changed the lives of many Scholars students, leading them to careers and/or graduate study they never dreamed possible when they first entered Stevens." -- Professor Michael Bruno
