Research is an exciting process that requires investigation and experimentation leading to the discovery of new knowledge. At Stevens, the methods utilized to offer you this type of hands-on experience vary by academic department, but a common thread of creation and discovery is woven into all of the undergraduate programs. Here are just a few of the routes you can follow. |
How to Participate
- Many Stevens professors, as well as graduate students pursuing their master's or doctoral degree, employ undergraduates in the fall and spring semesters to assist with their projects for academic credit or for a stipend.
- As a research university, Stevens has had long-standing ties with leading corporations that hire undergraduates for summer positions to assist in their labs. Stevens students also have access to contact federal research laboratories to apply for a summer fellowship.
- Several academic departments offer innovative courses and seminars so you can earn academic credit while conducting research. Course requirements and the number of credits earned varies by department.

Technogenesis Summer Scholars
In this program, undergraduates engage in
research, innovative design, or business projects
for 10 weeks over the summer. Students identify
a suitable project, find a faculty member to
work with, and submit a proposal to the
committee. Projects are funded by the Office of
Institute Technology Initiatives. This summer, 75
Technogenesis Summer Scholars have been
awarded the opportunity to engage in exciting
research endeavors on campus.
The Stevens Scholars Program
About 10 percent of each freshman class is invited to join the competitive Stevens Scholars program. By participating, you are able to take the Freshmen Seminar: a course designed to help first year students define and understand research, and write and defend a research proposal.
During the semester you also visit labs on campus and at corporate sites like Bell Labs and Princeton Infusion. As a Stevens Scholar you automatically get to conduct research in the summer with Stevens faculty while living on campus and earning a stipend.
UPTAM: Undergraduate Projects in Technology and Medicine
Academically talented undergraduates may also pursue a program called UPTAM - Undergraduate Projects in Technology and Medicine. In existence since 1972, UPTAM has been providing summer research opportunities for undergraduates interested in solving medical and biological related problems.
Approximately two dozen qualified students are selected each year to engage in research with a faculty mentor at Stevens or at a participating medical college.
