Pre-Professional, Accelerated, and Joint Degree Programs

If you are interested in pursuing a professional career in medicine, dentistry, or law, you can achieve your career goals at Stevens Institute of Technology. Each of our programs – Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dentistry, and Pre-Law – is distinguished by its rigor. All provide an education that equips you for the human and technological challenges of professional life.

Pre-Medicine and Pre-Dentistry
To prepare yourself for medical or dental school, you need an education based on a strong foundation in the sciences, a solid background in social science and humanities, and highly developed communication skills. The Pre-Medicine and Pre-Dentistry programs at Stevens meet these needs and offer challenging courses of study that match your ambition, as well as demand the very best of you to ensure success.

Undergraduate programs at Stevens that include the following courses satisfy the minimum requirements for admission to accredited U.S. medical and dental schools:

  • One year of general chemistry with laboratory; (Ch 115, Ch 116, Ch 117, Ch 118)
  • One year of organic chemistry with laboratory (Ch 241, Ch 242);
  • One year of biology with laboratory (Ch 381, Ch 382);
  • One year of physics with laboratory (PEP 111, PEP 112, PEP 221, PEP 222);
  • One year of mathematics through calculus (Ma 115, Ma 116);
  • One year of English including composition

We also recommend the following additional courses for those seeking admission to medical or dental school: physiology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, physical and/or inorganic chemistry. You should complete the required courses by the end of your junior year at Stevens, and take the appropriate national exam – Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) or Dental Admission Test (DAT). You are also strongly encouraged to participate in summer research or hospital service by the end of your Junior year. An interview and letter written by the Stevens Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) is required by most U.S. medical and dental schools.

Alpha Epsilon Delta Honor Society
Stevens is the New Jersey Beta Chapter of the national premedical honor society Alpha Epsilon Delta. Membership is an honor granted to students preparing for the health professions in recognition of superior scholastic achievement.

Pre-Law
While there are no specific course requirements for admission to law school, the Stevens humanities curriculum includes a pre-law concentration that leads to the B.A. degree and prepares you for admission into premiere law schools. You may also specialize in a technical area, such as environmental law.

If you enroll in the engineering or science programs to earn the B.E. or B.S. degree and would like to pursue law school upon graduation from Stevens, we advise you to complete a secondary concentration in the humanities to thoroughly prepare you for law school.

Our law school advisor helps you chose the elective courses that suit your talents and interests, as well as prepare you for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), which you take in your junior year at Stevens.

Accelerated Combined Degree Programs

Accelerated programs are combined degree programs with a medical, dental or law school, and are intended for exceptionally qualified students. Students admitted to the program take a predetermined set of courses at Stevens involving course overloads, and then transfer to the professional school at the end of three years. Stevens confers the Bachelor’s degree after successful completion of the first year of medical, dental or law school, and the M.D., D.M.D. or J.D. degree is awarded by the professional school at the completion of the regular medical, dental or law program. In medicine and dentistry, the Stevens program is the Accelerated Chemical Biology Program while the medical and dental programs are with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) – New Jersey Medical School, and New Jersey Dental School, respectively. In law, the accelerated programs are with the New York Law School.

Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission to either the Accelerated Pre-Medicine of Pre-Dentistry Program you need to meet these requirements:

  • Successfully complete the following high school course work:
    • Four years of English
    • Four years of mathematics (2 of algebra, 1 of geometry, 1 of pre-calculus)
    • Three years of science (1 of biology, 1 of chemistry, 1 of physics)
    • AP Biology and AP Chemistry, if possible, are recommended
  • Rank in the top 10% of your high school class
  • Achieve a combined SAT I score of 1400 (critical reading and math) in one sitting for the Accelerated Pre-Medicine Program and 1300 (critical reading and math) for the Accelerated Pre-Dentistry Program, as well as take the SAT II in Mathematics Level I or Level II, and Biology or Chemistry. All tests should be completed by December 15th.

The application deadline for the Accelerated Programs in Medicine or Dentistry is January 1st. You are required to complete an interview at Stevens and may be asked to meet with a representative at the UMDNJ medical or dental school.

Accelerated Law
Accelerated Pre-Law: If you want to apply for the Accelerated Pre-Law Program, the Admissions Committee at Stevens considers all high school seniors who fulfill the regular admissions requirements and have demonstrated academic excellence.

Accelerated Science and Law: An undergraduate preparation in Science is necessary if you wish to pursue a career in patent law. Patent law is the only branch of law that requires a second bar exam, and admission to the patent law bar exam requires that you possess a bachelor’s degree in one of the traditional fields of science, or have acquired a sufficient number of course credits in chemistry, biology and physics.

Therefore, the Accelerated Science and Law Program entails numerous course overloads to complete the science requirement at Stevens. To be considered for admission to the Accelerated Science and Law program, you must satisfy the admission requirements for the Accelerated program with an SAT score of at least 1300, and apply before January 1st. Your Science program at Stevens, then, can be Chemistry, Chemical Biology, or Physics.
