Student Spotlight: Jonathan Matos, '08

Jonathan Matos, Class of 2008, Mechanical Engineering

Senior Jonathan Matos, a mechanical engineering major from Stony Point, NY, had three job offers to choose from. The first came shortly after completing his final cooperative education opportunity last summer in the United Parcel Service (UPS) industrial engineering department. Jonathan believes his co-op work “was amazing” and the time spent on co-op jobs increased his confidence and prepared him for the interviews. “Co-op also helped me choose the position I want since I now not only know the type of work I want to do, but also the type of work environment I want to be in.”

Even though receiving the UPS offer was a sense of relief, Jonathan says he wanted “something more to validate all of the years of study I had been doing.” Thus he began working with the Office of Career Development. “Stevens' Career Development is definitely a 360-degree program that helps students through all phases of the job search and they pay attention to the specific needs of every student. The staff helped me personally with everything from scheduling interviews to then actually going through my offer letters with me and helping me understand exactly what a company is offering as a position and salary,” says Jonathan.

“After going on interviews I received offers from BAE Systems in Wayne, NJ and Hamilton Sundstrand in Windsor Locks, CT. I have accepted a position as a project engineer at Hamilton,” says Jonathan. “It’s actually a dream of mine to be working with a company such as Hamilton as they are a contractor for NASA and other aerospace companies."
