Early Decision

What is Early Decision?

If you have examined your college choices carefully and have decided that Stevens is your first choice university, then we offer two Early Decision plans for you to apply by November 15 (Early Decision I) or January 15 (Early Decision II) of your senior year.

If accepted, you will have successfully resolved your college plans by January 1 or February 15; if deferred, you will have effectively communicated your first-choice interest to the Admissions Committee as they are re-evaluated through the regular decision process.

Because the Early Decision plan is a binding agreement, we encourage you to discuss your plans with your parents and guidance counselor before making a final decision to ensure that Stevens is your first choice. You should also be sure that you will not need to consider financial aid packages from other institutions, as Stevens requires that you withdraw applications from all other universities.

How to Apply

Submit your application by November 15 for Early Decision I and by January 15 for Early Decision II. Candidates should check the box on page one of the application indicating that they are applying for Early Decision I or II and submit the signed Early Decision Agreement Form (PDF, 33KB) with the application. It is imperative that you submit all transcripts and official scores by this date, as well as complete your admissions interview.

Supporting documents and requirements, such as transcripts, personal statement, recommendations, and the admissions interview, must also be received or completed by December 4, 2007 for Early Decision I and February 1, 2008 for Early Decision II.

Learn more about Early Decision II at the Stevens Admissions Blog.

Financial Aid

Early Decision I

Candidates who are applicants for financial aid should complete the Financial Aid Application for Early Decision Applicants (PDF, 64KB) by December 4, 2007 (for Early Decision I ) to receive an estimate of your financial aid package.

Early Decision II

If you would like to be considered for financial aid as a part of the application, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by January 22, 2008 in order to receive a financial aid package with, or shortly following, our February 15 notification. Instructions are outlined below:

  • In order to receive your aid package in time for you to notify us of your intention to attend Stevens, you must fill out the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov by January 22, 2008. Due to time constraints, we do not recommend filing the FAFSA paper application for Early Decision II applicants. Filing by paper will add at least two weeks to processing time, thus resulting in missing our notification date.
  • The information you provide on the FAFSA can be estimated and updated as more current figures become available.
  • To indicate Stevens on your application, use the six-digit code: 002639. This application is required for consideration of any federal or state financial aid, including grants, loans and work-study.
  • Save a copy for your records.

All accepted students who submit their data by the aforementioned deadline will receive a Financial Aid package with, or shortly following, their acceptance notification. Any students who are eligible for merit scholarships will also be notified in that time frame.

Notification

Early Decision I (November 15 application deadline) applicants will be notified of the decision by December 15. Early Decision II (January 15 application deadline) applicants will be notified of the decision by February 15.
If you are accepted under the Early Decision Plan, you will also receive an estimated financial aid package which may include merit- and need-based awards.

Committing to Stevens

Upon your acceptance and review of your financial aid package, a $300 deposit is due to Stevens by January 5, 2008 for Early Decision I, and March 5, 2008 for Early Decision II. Deposits are payable by mail (check or money order), telephone (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express), or in person (cash, check, money order, or credit card).

Note: While early decision candidates may initiate applications to other colleges, if you are accepted under one of the early decision plans and commit to Stevens, then you must immediately withdraw all other applications and submit no new applications.

Other Application Decisions

If you apply through the Early Decision Plan and we are not able to accept you at that time, you may be deferred for reconsideration in the spring and notified of their final decision in late March or early April. The Admissions Committee defers students in order to have the benefit of additional senior grades and/or test scores that may not be available at the time of early decision or to see how they compare competitively to the entire regular decision applicant pool. In some cases, it is apparent to the Admissions Committee that an early decision candidate will clearly not be competitive for admission and that it is in the student's best interest to know this sooner rather than later. In this situation, the Admissions Committee denies the applicant at the time of early decision notification, thus enabling the student to focus on alternative plans.
