ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
All prospective members of fraternities and sororities at Stevens Institute

initiation.

RECRUITMENT ACTIVITIES
No recruitment activities may be held the first week of classes in any
semester.
Chapter members may not issue a promise or bid for pledging or initiation
purposes to any student until they have an approved Fraternity
and Sorority Membership Intake Form and the Pledge’s Bill of Rights Form
on file in the Student Life Office.
Only those students who meet the eligibility requirements will be approved
for membership.
All programs associated with recruitment are to be dry. No alcohol may
be present at a recruitment function or served to a prospective member
during the recruitment period.
A recruitment function is defined as:
- Any activity listed on a chapter’s recruitment calendar or advertised
as such on or off campus;
- Any activity, advertised or unadvertised, whose specific purpose
is to facilitate introductions and information exchanges between active
members and prospective members;
- Any open function (i.e. no guest-list) held prior to the issuance
of bids or invitations to prospective members.

All chapters are required to submit current membership and
officer lists to the Student Life Office each semester.
Utilization of services and space must be in compliance with organizational policies
designated by the Auxiliary and Conference Services of Stevens.
Solicitation and fund raising activities conducted on campus must receive prior
approval from the Student Life Office.
All chapters must participate in a Self-Evaluation process annually facilitated
by the Student Life Office.
It is the responsibility of chapter officers to ensure all members are informed
of Greek policies.
Prior to the commencement of pledge activities, each chapter must reeducate each
member on the definition of hazing and agree, via a roll call vote, to abstain
from participating in any activity deemed to constitute hazing.
Prior to the commencement of pledge activities, all chapters must verify that
prospective members meet the college’s minimum standards for pledging by obtaining
and submitting an approved Membership Intake Form and a Pledge’s Bill of Rights
Form for each prospective member to the Student Life Office.
Pledge activities should end by midnight on Sunday through Thursday nights when
classes are in session.
Pledges must be allowed eight continuous hours of sleep every night of the pledge
period.
Academic, employment, and family responsibilities take priority over all pledge
activities.
Pledges will not be encouraged or required to live together during or reside
in a residence specified by chapter members during the pledge period.
The pledge period may not exceed eight weeks.
All pledge activities must cease two weeks prior to the last class day of a semester.
Alumni and members of visiting chapters are not authorized to supervise pledge
activities.
No alcohol shall be present at any recruitment or pledge/associate member program
or activity of the chapter.
No chapter members, collectively or individually, shall purchase for, serve to,
or sell alcoholic beverages to any minor (i.e. those under the legal "drinking
age").
The possession, sale, and/or use of an illegal drug or controlled substance at
any chapter house, sponsored event, or at any event an observer would associate
with the chapter is strictly prohibited.
No chapter may co-sponsor an event with an alcohol distributor, charitable organization,
or tavern (tavern is defined as an establishment generating more than half of
annual gross sales from alcohol) where alcohol is given away, sold, or otherwise
provided to those present.
No chapter will tolerate or condone any form of sexually abusive behavior on
the part of its members, whether physical, mental, or emotional.
Chapter members are prohibited from participating in any activity during the
pledge period that constitutes the state or college definition of hazing. Hazing
activities are defined as:
Any action taken or situation crated, intentionally, whether
on or off college premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort,
embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. Such activities may include,
but are not limited to, the following: use of alcohol; paddling in any
form; creation of excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shocks;
publicly wearing apparel that is not normally in good taste; engaging
in behavior that is morally degrading, humiliating and/or dangerous;
and any other activity which is not consistent with fraternal law, ritual,
or policy.
Also refer to the New Jersey State statute defining hazing as a criminal
offense, which can be found on the Pledge’s Bill of Rights Form. |
