EARNING CREDITS
Traditional
Courses
Traditional courses are completed by attending classes and completing any
required assignments and laboratory work. Most courses at Stevens carry
three to four credits per semester hour. |
Course
by Examination
This program is open to students with a grade point average of 2.5 in the
previous semester or an overall grade point average of 2.5, as well as
to all freshmen and transfer students entering Stevens for the first time.
Course by examination may be used for eight courses, but is limited to
one course per semester, and the exam must be taken before the next term
begins. The approval of both the student's faculty advisor and the department
offering the course is required.
If the examination is successfully completed, the student will receive
a letter grade. If not, he or she must take that course during the coming
semester. In addition, an unsuccessful attempt to receive credit by exam
will be so recorded as a permanent part of his or her record. |
Course
by Application
If a particular course is not offered through the regular schedule, the
course may be taken "By Application" with the approval of the instructor,
the Department Head, and either Dean Russ or Dean Cesmebasi. Regular enrollment
is required, and arrangements are made for the student to study the material
and be tested during the term. A letter grade is issued at the end of the
semester. |
Personalized
Self-paced Instruction (PSI)
The Physics department offers courses under PSI, an alternative to the
conventional lecture/recitation method of instruction. Under PSI, you attend
no classes. Instead, you work at your own pace with the self-study materials,
and the help of a tutor to answer questions and explain points that are
unclear. The material is divided into short units, each with instructions
and a study guide. As each unit is completed, a test is given and rated
on a "pass" or "no pass" basis. If the test is passed, the student moves
on to the next unit; if not, the unit is restudied and the test repeated.
The number of times a test is taken has no bearing on the final grade.
Rather, you are evaluated on the basis of the number of units passed, the
quality of any laboratory work completed and performance on the final exam. |
Transfer
Credit
Stevens welcomes students transferring to advanced standing from junior
and community colleges as well as from other four-year institutions. It
is required that all students complete 50 percent of their courses at Stevens
in order to receive a degree from Stevens. At least five courses must be
technical electives taken in the junior and senior year. A minimum grade
of "C" is required for transfer credit. For further information, contact
the Office of Admissions. |
Academic
Advisors
Every undergraduate student at Stevens has a Faculty Advisor throughout
his/her career at Stevens. The Faculty Advisor is available to counsel
students with problems or questions, and to review and sign various administrative
and academic forms. |
Freshman
Advising System
Every entering student is assigned a Freshman Faculty Advisor upon his/her
arrival at Stevens. This Freshman Faculty Advisor will be the student's
faculty advisor until the student formally enters his/her concentration
field of study. This occurs with the completion of a Study Plan with a
Concentration Advisor during Term 3 for Engineering students and during
Term 2 for all students in Science, Computer Science and Liberal Arts.
Study Plans must be submitted earlier than this schedule if the student
wishes.
Students who are transferring into Stevens into the Engineering curriculum
and are undecided about their Engineering concentration are also assigned
a Freshman Faculty Advisor upon their arrival at Stevens. These students
must complete a Study Plan with their concentration advisors during the
semester prior to taking their first concentration elective. All other
transfer students are assigned their concentration advisors upon arrival
at Stevens, and must complete a Study Plan during their first semester. |
Concentration
Advising
During the semester when a student is required to submit a completed
Study Plan, the student selects a concentration advisor from the
list of concentration advisors and meets with the advisor to complete
the Study Plan. This faculty member will be the student's concentration
advisor for the remainder of the student's undergraduate career
at Stevens. Students enrolled in more than one degree program must
submit a Study Plan for each degree. The list of concentration
advisors is available from the Registrar's Office or from the Office
of the Dean of the Faculty. |
Changing
Advisors
If a student wishes to change his/her Freshman or Concentration Advisor,
they should contact Dean Russ either in person, by phone, or by e-mail,
so that he can make the change in the Student Information System (SIS). |
