OPERATING PROCEDURES for Fraternities & Sororities 2004-2005

STUDENT FACULTY COMMITTEES
Faculty Committee on the Library
This committee shall work with the Librarian and the Academic Planning and Resources Committee to ensure that the library is capable of meeting the present and future educational and scholarly requirements of students and faculty.

The voting membership will consist of the Librarian, three elected faculty members, two members appointed by the President and four students (two graduate and two undergraduate students). Of the three elected faculty, one faculty member shall come from each of the three following groups of departments: a) Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Civil and Ocean Engineering, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering; b) Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Pure and Applied Engineering Physics; c) Humanities, Engineering Management and Physical Education. The two graduate students are appointed by the Dean of the Graduate Studies in consultation with GRAB. The two undergraduate students are appointed by the Dean of Students in consultation with the Student Council. The Committee will elect its chairperson from those members who are regular faculty.
Faculty Committee on Undergraduate Curricula
This Committee is responsible for the quality revision as needed, and detailed functioning of undergraduate curricula. It will bring all proposals for revision of core courses of each curriculum to the faculty as needed; continuously monitory core courses; approve and monitor electives within each curriculum; establish rules for guiding the operation of each curriculum, subject to rules established by the Faculty; and make recommendations to the Chief Academic Officer regarding assignment of responsibility for interdepartmental courses. The Chief Academic Officer will bring to the Committee for discussion and advice all matters affecting undergraduate curricula coming to his/her attention, even when the decision-making responsibility does not rest with the Committee. The Committee, or subcommittees or special committees established by it or through its recommendation, shall conduct periodic reviews of each undergraduate curriculum.

The voting membership will consist of regular faculty. The non-voting membership may consist of not more than one member appointed by the Chief Academic Officer and two undergraduate students. Others may be invited by the Committee to attend without vote. One regular faculty member will be appointed by each Department Head and two undergraduate students will be appointed or elected in a manner determined by the students. Each faculty member will serve for a period of time determined by the Department Head. The Committee will elect its chairperson from those members who are regular faculty but not members of the administration.
Faculty Committee on Student Affairs
This committee will have jurisdiction over the activities and constitutions of all undergraduate organizations, including fraternities. It shall make recommendations for the improvement of undergraduate community life at Stevens to any appropriate body. The committee shall invite the Director of Financial Aid to meetings, as appropriate, and shall advise the Director on Financial Aid. The committee shall establish general guidelines for the maintenance of discipline on the campus. Its function is advisory and the Dean of Student Life enforces discipline.

The voting membership will consist of regular faculty, the Dean of Student Life and undergraduate students. Others may be invited by the committee to attend without vote. Three regular faculty will be elected by the Faculty and four undergraduate students appointed or elected in a manner determined by the students. One faculty member will be appointed by the committee to attend meetings of the Graduate Student Affairs Committee. The Dean of Student Life will be the chairperson.
Faculty Committee on Undergraduate Academic Standards
This separately established standing subcommittee will report directly to the Undergraduate Curricula Committee. The subcommittee will investigate, consult with the Administration, and purpose to the faculty, standards of scholarship, education, grading, tests, examinations, attendance, admissions, and the award of advanced standing and transfer credit in the undergraduate school. The committee shall concern itself with the Honor System insofar as it affects academic standards. It shall report its findings and recommendations to the Undergraduate Curricula Committee. This committee is required to submit a written annual report and a verbal annual report to the Undergraduate Curricula Committee. Other written or verbal reports to the UCC may be submitted or presented as the Committee sees fit.

The Committee will elect its chairperson from those members who are regular faculty.
Academic Standards
All fraternities and sororities are obligated to assure that the cumulative grade point of their members at Stevens Institute of Technology is at least a 2.5 each semester.

Fraternities and sororities whose cumulative grade point average is less than a 2.5 shall be classified as on probationary status and their national organization shall be notified. During the probationary period, the chapter will be required to sponsor a study skills workshop and a time management workshop which will be mandatory for all active members with an individual grade point average of less than a 2.5.

If an organization records a cumulative grade point average of less than a 2.5 for two consecutive semesters, it shall lose all organizational privileges on campus and its recognition will be suspended until it is in compliance with the minimum academic standards for fraternities and sororities.

All organizations having a GPA lower then a 2.5 will have until June 1999 to meet the minimum requirements. If the house does not meet the requirement they will be suspended.

The Dean of Student Life, or his/her designees, shall administer these standards.
