Dean's
List
To be eligible for the Dean's List, which is prepared by the Dean for Students
Affairs at the end of each academic term, you must be in good standing
as a college citizen, must earn at least 12 credits, and must have an overall "B" average
for the courses completed during the term, with no failures. |
Promoted
A student must have a passing grade in all courses required for the degree
and a cumulative average of "C" or better to be promoted. |
Promoted
(Insufficient Credits)
Any student satisfactorily following an approved study plan that departs
from a standard curriculum outline may move on to the next semester. Examples
of students in this category are transfer students, as well as those on
decelerated programs. Such students are considered to be in good academic
standing. |
Probation
A student with an unsatisfactory record at the end of the semester will
be placed on probation by the Faculty Committee on Undergraduate Promotions.
If all deficiencies have been made up and a "C" average attained, the
student will be removed from probation. A student on probation may, if
lack of responsibility to academic work continues, be asked to withdraw
at any time without refund of tuition, room rent or other charges for
the current term. |
Probation
(Reduced Load)
A student with an unsatisfactory record at the end of a semester may be
allowed to continue on probation, taking less than the normal number of
courses. Dean Russ or Dean Cesmebasi must approve this decelerated program. |
Referred
to Dean
A student in this category has some irregularity in his/her academic program,
usually work not completed for the current semester. Barring special circumstances,
all such work must be completed by the fifth day of the following semester,
and the Registrar's Office must be notified prior to the start of the new
semester of plans to complete the work. |
Not
Promoted
A student who is not promoted, according to an action taken by the Faculty
Committee on Undergraduate Promotions, must meet with Dean Russ or Dean
Cesmebasi to plan a schedule for removing academic deficiencies. |
Required
to Withdraw
A student can be required to withdraw from the Institute due to consistently
substandard performance. There is also a faculty rule that a student must
pass a core course within three attempts. Failure to do so will result
in the student being required to withdraw from the Institute. |
Appeals
The Faculty Committee on Academic Appeals serves an appellate function
on cases arising from academic actions of the Faculty Committee on Undergraduate
Promotions.
The Committee does not consider requests for grade changes and does not
grant appeals based on circumstances over which the student has control,
such as voluntary absence from class, failure to complete a required
assignment, or concentration on extracurricular activities to the detriment
of academic requirements. Extraordinary circumstances are usually prerequisites
for the granting of an appeal by the committee. Instructions for the
proper procedure on appeals are mailed with the Promotions Committee's
actions.

Decelerated
Degree Program
Stevens also offers a Decelerated Degree Program (Five-Year Plan). Under
the Five-Year Plan, which is available to students in all curricula, students
take a reduced load each semester and take five years to complete their
course of studies. There is no charge for the fifth year's tuition for
students who sign up for the Five-Year Plan before the November 7th deadline
in the first semester of study. Students who sign up for the Modified Five-Year
Plan between November 8 in their first semester and the beginning of their
third semester have half of their fifth year's tuition waived. |
Leave
of Absence
Undergraduate students who are promoted but wish to withdraw for personal
reasons should fill out the appropriate paperwork with either Dean Russ
or Dean Cesmebasi, which will become effective at the end of the present
semester. Leave of Absence status allows for unconditional readmission
for one calendar year. After that, if the student doesn't reapply for an
additional Leave of Absence, his or her status will be changed to withdrawal.
Students applying for an additional year's Leave of Absence should be aware
that restrictions and pre-conditions may be placed upon readmission.
Any student considering a Leave of Absence should take into consideration
the sequence of course offerings: usually, if a student misses courses
offered in any semester, these courses may not be offered again until
a year later, making it impossible to resume study after a leave of
only half a year. The student should therefore consult carefully with
Dean Russ or Dean Cesmebasi before committing to a leave.
|
Readmission
Students wishing to be re-admitted to Stevens Institute of Technology should
apply at the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Academics. |
Degree
with Honor
The undergraduate degree with Honor is conferred to students who have an
average of 3.2 for courses applied toward the undergraduate degree requirements.
The degree with High Honor is conferred to students who achieve a cumulative
grade point average of 3.6. |
Degree
with Thesis
A student wishing to graduate with a Degree with Thesis must submit a Recommendation
for Degree with Thesis Form to the Office of the Dean of the Faculty no
later then December 15 of the senior year. In April of the senior year
the student must submit an Application for Degree with Thesis after the
approved thesis has been delivered to the Library. Some points of interest
about the Thesis:
- the diploma reads "with Thesis"
- the Thesis is not for credit and is over and above the other degree
requirements
- the Thesis does not effect the GPA
- the Thesis is not treated as an overload for tuition calculation
- the student may begin work on the Thesis before the senior year

Degree
with Minor
Stevens offers students opportunities to obtain recognition for study in
fields outside their technical concentration field. Several departments
offer minors, which provide for coherent programs of study in one area
without the depth and senior project required for a major concentration.
The program for a minor typically includes five to seven courses in the
minor field. Minors are currently offered in Computer Engineering, Computer
Science, Electrical Engineering, History, Literature, Materials, Mathematics,
Philosophy, Social Science, and Science, Technology & Society. |
Double
Degree (B.A. and either B.S. or B.E.)
This double degree program requires seven Humanities courses beyond those
required for the B.S. or B.E. plus a senior thesis. At least ten of the
student's Humanities courses (as well as the senior thesis) must be in
the student's Humanities concentration field. Two Study Plans are required.
B.S. and B.E. Requirements
- satisfy all requirements for both degrees
- have completed at least 24 credits beyond the higher of the two program
requirements
Two B.E. Degree Requirements
- satisfy all the requirements for both degrees (including two Senior
Designs)
- have completed at least 24 credits beyond the higher of the two program
requirements
If a student wishes to pursue a dual Bachelor's/Master degree, he/she
must apply to the graduate department, be assigned a graduate advisor,
and submit an approved Master's degree Study Plan. The Master's degree
courses can then be taken as overloads in such a way as to satisfy all
prerequisite requirements. If a student does not finish all the requirements
for the Master's degree at the time of undergraduate graduation, the
Master's courses are listed on the transcript as being for deferred graduate
credit, and the Master's degree can be completed at a later time.

Graduation
To be eligible for graduation, you must have a cumulative average of "C" (2.0)
for eight terms of work, and must not have an "F" grade in a core course
or required technical elective. All senior year courses require a 1.75
grade point average. Your class rank is computed from grades earned in
all courses for undergraduate credit. When you repeat a course to upgrade
your mark, both grades will be averaged to determine computer class rank.
But, the 2.0 average required for graduation will be based only on the
last grade received in a course. |
