The Lawrence Schacht Laboratory

The Lawrence Schacht Laboratory complex is located on the 3rd Floor of the Morton-Kidde Building (image on the left). The laboratory complex consists of conference facilities, multimedia classrooms, and a teaching classroom with 34 personal computers. The computer classroom has 34 personal computers loaded with a wide variety of project management, accounting, simulation, and analysis software. The complex is jointly operated by the School of Systems and Enterprises and the School of Technology Management. The department's offices and facilities are located on the 5th floor of the Babbio Building.

Lawrence Schacht '27, was a long-time benefactor of Stevens Institute of Technology and a member of the Development Committee of the Stevens Board of Trustee (1976 - 1984). Schacht was also a former member of its Finance and Investment Committee. He was the benefactor of the Lawrence Schacht Management Laboratory in the Kidde Building at Stevens, dedicated in April, 1980.

We are proud to salute Larry posthumously for his unfailing wisdom and generosity and for the vitality with which he approached every endeavor.

Born in New York City in 1905, he lived in South Orange, NJ, from 1956 until his retirement to Boca Raton, FL, in 1977. He died in Dec. 16, 1984 at St. Barnabus Center, Livingston, NJ.

Lawrence Schacht devoted a lifetime building a thriving business, raising Substantial funds for worthy organizations and promoting higher education both in the United States and in Israel. In 1933, he took over B. Schacht Ironworks, a company founded by his father. He developed it into Schacht Steel Construction Inc. of Hillside, NJ, which he served as president from 1933 to 1977. He was also president and chairman of the board of Standard Dredging Corp., New York, from 1968 to 1971. He also was a director of three banks.

In 1951, with the same confidence he drew upon as he led his business enterprise to success, he created the Schacht Foundation and turned his attention to charitable causes. Among the many organizations to which he lent his support and vigorous leadership were the United Jewish Appeal, the State of Israel Bonds Committee, the Jewish Community Council of Essex County and the Daughters of Israel Home for Aged. Schacht was also a member of the Society of the Founders of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Manhattan, the Vascular Research Foundation, the American-Israeli Chamber of Commerce and the Society of American Military Engineers.

Systems and Enterprise Architecting Laboratory

SEAL provides a platform for innovative teaching methods, research and government/industry collaboration. The lab offers physical, on-site presence as well as virtual presence for remote access and collaboration. The physical presence of the lab includes a combined team room/computer lab as well as the adjacent classroom. This allows the lab to accommodate large- and small-scale co-located groups. These facilitates can be used for larger project- and design reviews as well as a “war-room” style ambience for intensive, collaborative team work

The virtual presence provides an infrastructure for on-line, interactive team collaboration as well as teaching. In addition to a computing infrastructure using Internet based collaboration tools, both the team room and the classroom is equipped with traditional audio and video conferencing. The lab also has state of the art SW tools for system architecting, design and integration as well as enterprise optimization. These are available to be used as an integral part of course project work and for research.  For more information, please contact the S&EAL Director, Eirik Hole
