Visa Requirements

Based on the USCIS requirements, Stevens has determined that all students in this program will be considered part of the Exchange Visitor Program. Students in the Systems Engineering Masters Program are required to obtain a J-1 visa to travel to the United States. There are several exchange visitor program categories - Student, Research Scholar, Short-Term scholar, Professor etc. Each category of exchange has specific requirements and regulations. Given the skills and accomplishments of students selected into this program, students in the Stevens Exchange program will be classified under the "J-1 Masters Student" category.

In certain cases, exchange visitors are subject to the two-year home country physical presence requirement, if the following conditions exist:

  • Government funded exchange program - The program in which the exchange visitor was participating was financed in whole or in part directly or indirectly by the United States government or the government of the exchange visitor's nationality or last residence;
  • Graduate medical education or training - The exchange visitor entered the United States to receive graduate medical education or training;
  • Specialized knowledge or skill: Skills List - The exchange visitor is a national or permanent resident of a country which has deemed the field of specialized knowledge or skill necessary to the development of the country, as shown on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. Review the Exchange Visitor Skills List 2009

Students in the Master's Degree Program fall in the first category. There may be a two-year home country physical presence for students in this program. For more information on the residency requirement please visit the US Embassy in Norway webpage at

http://norway.usembassy.gov/non-immigrant_visas.html or contact the US embassy at Norway.

After completion of their courses at Stevens and their return to Norway, students are eligible to apply for re-entry to the U.S under non-immigrant visa classes (other than H or L) without a waiting period; these classes include F-1, J-1, B-1, B-2 etc. While on a J-1 visa students cannot change their status to H, L, K, or lawful permanent resident (LPR) until he or she has returned to his/her home country for at least two-years.
