It is the goal of the Engineering Management program to develop a portfolio of outstanding senior design projects for senior Engineering Management students. The portfolio contains a mix of projects that are industry sponsored, oriented to faculty research and interests, and entrepreneurial projects suggested by students. It is the goal to develop these by the end of the spring semester preceding the senior year. Multidisciplinary projects have already been developed and are encouraged. These projects are typically conducted in the two semester design sequence during their senior year.

The Sponsored Senior Design Program is the cumulation of their engineering education. Typically spanning the three semesters students work in teams of up to four persons. The scope of the project is decided in discussion between the sponsor and a Stevens senior design coordinator. A suitable project is one that provides value to the sponsor, is appropriate to the time scale, and meets the academic requirements of the program.

Stevens' faculty members with expertise in the field(s) of the project, together with a liaison from the sponsor, provide joint supervision of the groups. After an initial proposal developed by the student team is accepted, feedback to the sponsor is typically maintained by several site visits. Visits include discussion and presentation of progress together with a provision for a comprehensive final report.

CORPORATE SPONSORS

Sponsorship provides a context for the project that can afford the students a meaningful bridge to the "real world" of professional work. In keeping with this, our goal is to have students work on cross-disciplinary teams so that they gain experience in the type of environment that they will experience in their careers.

Sponsored Senior Design can significantly benefit both the students and the sponsoring organization. Recent industrial sponsors have been United Parcel Service, Ethicon, New Jersey Department of Agriculture, Medina Consultants, United States Postal Service, and the City of Elizabeth, NJ.
