In addition to private loan programs to which international students may apply, all international students are eligible to apply for Teaching and/or Research Assistantships, which typically cover the costs of tuition and include a stipend. All assistantships are awarded competitively by academic departments. A separate application is required, which can be found online at http://www.stevens.edu/graduate.
We recommend that international students investigate other funding sources in their homeland prior to beginning their studies. You may find the information provided at www.edupass.org useful. Also visit http://www.nafsa.org, click

Graduate Housing
Campus housing for graduate students is very limited. If you would like to live in campus housing, please notify the housing office directly. Housing forms are available online at www.stevens.edu/housing.
Our graduate residence halls are conveniently located within walking distance of the campus. You will be living among the thousands of artists and professionals that call Hoboken home. This historic city has everything a student could ever ask for with many restaurants, stores, and specialty shops. New York City and all it has to offer is just a quick,
ten-minute train ride away. With all of this, Stevens is the ideal place to live.
For those of you who are not planning to stay in campus housing, it is essential to arrive early, because finding housing in Hoboken can be a time-consuming process. Emergency housing on campus is not generally available, so you may need to make alternate housing arrangements with relatives, friends, or at a hotel while you look for an apartment. If you need help looking for housing off campus, the Housing Office can put you in touch with a local realtor who assists Stevens students.
English As a Second Language Program
The English As a Second Language Program is administered by the Office of International Student and Scholar Services.
Students from countries whose first language is not English will be immersed in American English. Therefore, all graduate students will undergo an evaluation of their English skills during orientation.
Students will not be permitted to register until this evaluation has been completed. If a student's evaluation demonstrates that he or she will benefit from one of the four levels of English instruction provided, enrollment into that class will be required.
Graduate Student Orientation
All graduate students are required to attend a three-day, intensive orientation upon their arrival at Stevens. In addition to familiarizing you with the Stevens campus, Orientation includes:
English language testing
Immigration workshop
Student services orientation
Local area familiarization
Campus safety information
Enrollment procedures
Registration for courses
Payments and student accounts
Pursuing Your Education in the United States
There are many important factors to take care of when you plan to study in the U.S. and at Stevens. Pay special attention to the following:
Arrival in the U.S.
Most students coming to Stevens fly to JFK (Kennedy) International Airport in New York or Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. From the airports, you can reach Stevens by taxi, bus, subway, or train.
Immigration and Customs
New immigration regulations permit entry into the U.S. up to 30 days prior to the reporting date on your I-20 form. Be sure to carry your travel documents, including your I-20 or DS-2019 form, with you. Do not put them into your checked baggage. While traveling to the United States, you will be provided with a Customs form and an I-94 form for immigration. Be prepared to present to the officer your passport (with valid F student or J exchange visitor visa), all three pages of your I-20 form (for F visas), or your DS-2019 form (for J visas), and your completed Customs and I-94 forms. Sometimes you may be asked for your financial documentation as well. The immigration officer should stamp your I-94 card, passport, and your I-20 or DS-2019 on page 1. It is important that this be done correctly, so please check your documents after leaving the inspection station—if any stamps or documents are missing, contact an immigration supervisor right away. If you discover something is missing after leaving the customs area, contact an airline representative to get in touch with Immigration before leaving the airport.
Social Security Number
As a student, you will not be issued a U.S. Social Security Number until you show that you are eligible for employment either on or off campus. To receive a Social Security Number, obtain a prescribed letter from the hiring department and have it signed also by the Office of International Student and Scholar Services confirming your F-1 status.
New international students are generally not eligible to work off campus during their first academic year.
Tax ID Number
You will temporarily be given a number that begins with 999-. This is an identification number that Stevens uses for internal records. It looks similar to a Social Security Number, but is not the same. Do not use your Stevens ID number anywhere off campus. If you are not immediately eligible to receive a Social Security Number, you may request a Tax ID number, which is issued by the U.S. government agency called the IRS (Internal Revenue Service). The Tax ID number is not the same as a Social Security Number.
Bank Accounts
Students should open bank accounts as quickly as possible after arriving at Stevens. To do so, you will need to show the bank your identification (usually your passport). All banks have a form called a W-9, which you must fill out and give to the bank before you can open the account. Once you have deposited your money, it may take up to two weeks before you will be able to withdraw any cash, unless you deposit travelers' checks.
Taxes and Arrival in the United States
U.S. tax laws often grant special time-limited exemptions to F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars. These exemptions vary depending on tax treaties signed between the U.S. and various countries. More information is available online on the IRS web site at www.irs.gov/pub/ irs-pdf/p901.pdf. It is generally advisable that students entering Stevens in the Spring semester arrive on or after January 1, to avoid losing a year of exemption.
Medical Requirements and Health Insurance
All full-time students are required to have health and accident insurance and will automatically billed for a policy arranged by Stevens unless they have alternative insurance and request a waiver from the Student Service Center at the beginning of the semester. All students are also required to provide a complete immunization record. Every full-time undergraduate student and/or campus resident must also have a completed health record in the Student Health Services Center. In compliance with State of New Jersey regulations, you must be immunized with two doses of measles, one dose of mumps, and one dose of rubella vaccine prior to attending any classes. Additionally, Stevens requires students to have a Mantoux tuberculin skin test within six months of attending classes. A blank immunization record form to assist you in meeting these requirements is sent with your I-20 form (for graduate students).
There is a requirement in the State of New Jersey for all incoming, new students living in Stevens Housing to be vaccinated with one dose of meningitis vaccine before arriving at Stevens. Please bring the appropriate document signed or stamped by a physician or medical clinic.
All form(s) must be completed in full, signed, and dated by a healthcare provider/MD, and must be received by the Student Health Center before attending classes.
Check-in
After arrival, please check in with the ISSS Office on the 5th floor of the Howe Center with your travel and immigration documents.
