What is a hooding ceremony?
The hooding ceremony is a special recognition event for doctoral degree candidates. The ceremony is similar to a graduation in that faculty and students are dressed in academic attire. This ceremony is tailored as a special honor for graduating doctoral students.
Who performs the hooding?
Each doctoral candidate is asked to invite a faculty member to assist the Dean of Graduate Academics. The faculty member may be the candidate’s faculty advisor or another faculty member of the candidate’s choice. If a faculty member is not available, faculty members will be available.
What occurs during the ceremony?
During the ceremony, the Dean of Graduate Academics and the Provost will make brief remarks. The Dean of each school will call the names of each candidate and faculty member. The faculty member and the Dean of Graduate Academics will place the doctoral hood on the graduate, signifying their completion of the graduate program.
Who is invited to attend?
Graduating doctoral students may invite their friends and family. Invitations to graduates will be sent to your Stevens email address from the Office of Graduate Student Affairs.
Does the hooding ceremony replace commencement exercises?
No, the ceremony is in addition to the Graduate Commencement exercises, which are scheduled on Wednesday, May 21 at 10 a.m.
