The Application Process

In order to complete the application process to Stevens, prospective students must complete the following:

1. APPLICATION

Submit a completed application – the Stevens Online Application, the Common Application, or the Stevens Paper Application.

2. INTERVIEW

Stevens requires in-person interviews for all students who live within 250 miles of our Hoboken campus. Those who live more than 250 miles from campus are strongly encouraged to interview on campus; if this is not possible, however, you can contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to schedule a phone interview. International students may choose to complete their interview either over the phone or via Skype. Please note: interviews can be scheduled and completed even before you officially apply to Stevens. Read our Interview FAQs. Contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 800-STEVENS or admissions@stevens.edu to set up an interview, or complete and submit our online interview form.

3. RECOMMENDATIONS

Stevens requires two letters of recommendation – one from your guidance counselor and one from a teacher. Download a recommendation form here.

4. TRANSCRIPTS

Submit an official high school transcript. If you are applying as a transfer student, please have a final high school transcript as well as official transcripts from all previously attended college(s) forwarded to Stevens.

5. TEST SCORES
  • We require the SAT I or ACT for all applicants. Remember to include the Stevens Institute of Technology CEEB code number 2819 so your test scores can be forwarded to us. We do not require test scores for transfer students who have earned 30 or more college credits.
  • The SAT II is not required, except for Accelerated Pre-Medicine and Pre-Dentistry applicants, who must take the SAT I in addition to at least two (2) SAT II exams, math level I or II and biology or chemistry.
  • Students from non-English speaking countries who score below 550 on the critical reading section of the SAT I must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) examination to determine language proficiency.
  • Transfer students who have completed 30 or more college credits do not need to submit test scores.
6. ESSAY

Please tell us about yourself by writing and submitting an essay. This is part of the application process for both the Stevens Online Application and the Common Application. Students completing the paper application should include the essay with their application.

7. FINANCIAL AID
  • All students who wish to be considered for federal, state and/or Institutional financial aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available after January 1, and must be filed by February 15. This does not apply to international students.
  • Additionally, students who wish to be considered for Stevens institutional aid in the form of scholarships and grants must complete the College Scholarship Service Profile (CSS PROFILE) by February 15. Please note that deadlines for Early Decision candidates are earlier (see our application timeline). This does not apply to international students.
  • Stevens does not offer need-based financial aid to international applicants. However, there are partial merit-based awards which are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Visiting Campus

Although not required, a campus visit and tour is an extremely helpful part of the application process. Most applicants find this to be essential and benefit from visiting Stevens. You can either schedule an appointment to meet with an admissions representative and tour the campus, or register online for a Visit Day event.

Application Confirmation

Once your application has been submitted, you will receive an acknowledgement from our office indicating that your application was received. This acknowledgement may include a request for information that the University needs in order to complete the application process, as outlined in the requirements above.

Notification of Admission Decision

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will notify you of its admission decision regarding your completed application by mail. See the Application Timeline for a guide to decision notification dates.

Information for Transfer Students

Transfer credits will be evaluated upon acceptance to Stevens. At that time, we will require that you send all course descriptions and/ or course syllabi. When sending a college catalog, please mark and highlight all courses to evaluate. Please read all information related to credit evaluations to fully understand the process.

Stevens awards transfer credit by matching your courses with equivalent Stevens courses. The content of a catalog description can usually assist us in determining whether your course satisfy Stevens' academic standards. However, the more information we have, the better chance you have of receiving credit. Ask your instructor or department head to provide you with a course outline. Course outlines are highly recommended for mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, statistics, dynamics, and natural science courses.

We do not accept previously transferred credits from your last college; evaluations are done with respect to each individual college you attended.

An official AP score report is required for any AP credit. Read more about transferring advanced placement credits.

International Transfer Students

Students transferring from a college(s) outside of the United States must provide and certify the number of lab hours per week and the number of weeks each course met per term. All documentation (including course descriptions) must be translated. If you have any questions regarding transferring credits from a college(s) outside of the U.S., please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 1-201-216-5194, or by email.

I-20 Information for International Students

Stevens’ Office of International Student and Scholar Services issues I-20s to international students once they have been accepted, official TOEFL/IELTs scores have been received, and proof of financial support for one year’s study at Stevens has been received. This is a U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) requirement. Stevens cannot issue an I-20 without this proof, which includes a completed Financial Verification Form or an INS Affidavit of Support (I-34) accompanied by supporting bank documentation (see Financial Verification Form). Your documents must be notarized, in U.S. dollars, and no older than six months. You will receive your I-20 approximately two weeks after your acceptance to Stevens.

You are not required to send your financial documentation with the rest of your application materials. However,  if you are accepted into Stevens and did include your financial documents, you will receive your I-20 sooner than if you did not include them.

Nondiscrimination Policy
Stevens Institute of Technology does not discriminate against any person because of race, creed, color, national origin, gender, marital status, handicap, liability for service in the armed forces, or status as a disabled Vietnam-era veteran.
