Cooperative Education

The premier form of pre-professional development, Cooperative Education is the hands-on experience with state-of-the-art technologies, taking what you learn from our faculty in the classroom and applying it in the workplace. It's working alongside professionals in business or industry.

A unique academically-based program that allows you to gain valuable work experience before you graduate, Stevens' co-op program has both four- and five-year options. Currently, 40 percent of Stevens Institute of Technology undergraduates participate in the program, using their academic preparation to solve real-world problems and create innovative products.

The theory-practice approach of the Stevens programs differs from that of other institutions, because at Stevens you alternate semesters of classroom study with full-time semesters of paid, professional employment that is directly related to your major field of study and your career goals. By blending the two, you get the best of both worlds – outstanding academic preparation and impressive hands-on experience – to yield an education unlike any other.

Turn the Workplace into Your Classroom

Your co-op experiences complement your courses taken on campus. Therefore, you have the ability to apply what you learn in the classroom to help solve real problems alongside dedicated professionals. Stevens students have had co-op assignments that have allowed them to:

  • Design and inspect roads and bridges
  • Test the chemical composition of pharmaceuticals
  • Oversee soil remediation and water quality projects
  • Participate in new product launches and assembly line start-up
  • Design an ejection system for a satellite
  • Prepare cells for studies on drug interaction by performing cell culturing, seeding, freezing, expansions, and membrane preparation
  • Develop and present training materials on equipment use and maintenance
  • Write scripts on a Unix machine to parse air traffic data
  • Transfer a major product line from a domestic facility in the US to a facility in Mexico
  • Plan and design data communication links between head and branch offices
  • Analyze schematics of patient monitoring devices to determine the cause of product failure

Explore Different Career Paths

The Stevens Co-op Office has strong ties to industry seeking bright and energetic students who want to become engineers, scientists, computer specialists, and entrepreneurs. As a Stevens student, you have the opportunity to work for companies ranging from Fortune 500 corporations to small entrepreneurial firms in a variety of positions pertaining to your academic and career goals.

Develop a Professional Resume and a Network of Contacts

At the end of your co-op experience you will have produced a resume with two years of increasingly responsible, professional, paid employment. Surveys show that co-op students are among the most successful in finding a permanent position upon graduation. Some companies hire co-op students with the intention of offering them a permanent position upon satisfactory completion of their co-op assignment and their studies at Stevens.

With each co-op experience, you will gain a higher level of confidence. You will have proven to yourself and to your employers that you can take the initiative and be creative. You will have put what you have learned to the test, having solved many problems in a variety of settings. These valuable skills will take you far in life and help you reach your personal and professional goals.
