A Competitive Advantage: Internships lead to impressive résumés for Stevens business students

Doug Stewart is a senior business and technology major who came to Stevens as a transfer student from Bucknell University.  During an internship at Goldman Sachs this summer, Doug served as an analyst in operations, working on a cross-divisional project to improve efficiency in business processing.  When he applied to the internship, Doug said he felt that as a Stevens student he was differentiated from other applicants. Doug describes his biggest take-away from the experience: "I learned how to find a way to translate what I'd learned in the classroom and apply it in a new and different way. I assisted in changing a business process for the better, and I can apply that ability now to any field or job. I consider it the real value of my degree."

Recently accepting an offer for a fulltime position at J.P. Morgan Chase, Doug highly recommends that incoming students look into internship options and the process of applying to them early on.  "You really need that experience. It makes you so much more attractive after graduation and offers the experience you need to better segue to the work force," he said.  "I chose Stevens for opportunities like this and also because Stevens makes us critical thinkers.  In my degree, for example, the marriage of hard science and math with the course work you might find in other competitive business schools is important.  It's not just the content that makes us distinct out there in the industry, but also Stevens' way of instilling in us a critical way of thinking."

Outside of class and work, Doug is an avid surfer, snowboarder and founding member of the soccer club at Stevens.
