Engineering Management Program Receives National Awards

At the 2001 American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) Conference in Huntsville, Alabama, Stevens was honored at the conference and awarded two very distinguished awards. The Stevens' Bachelor of Engineering in Engineering Management (BEEM) Program was honored for their overall curriculum, as was Stevens' student ASEM chapter for campus activity and services to fellow students.

The first award, the Award for Academic Excellence, reads: " A National Award In Recognition of Notable and Exemplary Leadership In Management and Technology In An Academic Program In Engineering Management." This year marks the second time that Stevens has won the national award since its inception in 1991.

The BEEM program was recognized as a leader in undergraduate education because of its unique Senior Design process, the technical depth and rigor of this ABET accredited program. The Co-Program directors are Dr. John Mihalasky and Dr. Kate Abel. Dr. John Farr serves as the Department Director. The program was also recognized for its contribution to overall engineering education with its unique course in Engineering Economic Design for all engineering students under the direction of Dr. Donald Merino.

The second award was the Founders Award given to the Stevens' student chapter of the ASEM. This is the third time the Founders Award has been given to the Stevens' student chapter since the awards inception in 1987. It was previously awarded to Stevens consecutively, in 1990 and 1991. Dr. Kate Abel serves as faculty advisor for the ASEM student chapter. The Founders Award was given to the student chapter for their presentation of programs, service to fellow students, and for their efforts with the preparation for the upcoming ABET accreditation visit

Since the Engineering Management Program's inception, students have continued to enroll because of the recognized quality of the product, the education, their competitive edge in the job market, and its relevant curriculum. Also, many Students recognize the usefulness of the degree, and continue on to higher education in the field to further their advantage.

The awards will be displayed outside the department offices on the fifth floor of the Burchard Building for all to view.
