Master of Engineering Process

The Master of Engineering in Systems Engineering SDOE program requires 30 credits, including individual research in the form of a project (3 credits) or a thesis (6 credits).  The core courses required for the degree have a strong case study and project orientation to facilitate understanding and exemplify the practicality of the concepts discussed.

There are four core courses, outlined in the Curriculum, SDOE 625 Operational Effectiveness and Life Cycle Analysis (Fundamentals of Systems Engineering) is the first course in the program, followed by SDOE 650 Systems Architecture and Design.  Please refer to the Modular or Online Course Schedule for date and location availability.

The Degree Structure (54KB PDF) illustrates how the Graduate Certificates can be used toward the master’s degree enabling achievement of the master’s degree as well as one or more certificates while completing the 30 credits.

The Module Course Schedule includes the functionality of generating an Enrollment form for the courses you choose and calculating the tuition and fees for you.  Please fax your Enrollment form to the SDOE Program Office.

Homework for Modular Courses is due 10 weeks after the one-week course.  If circumstances arise where you cannot complete the homework, you have two options.  First, you can contact the instructor and request an INC (incomplete) grade.  If the instructor agrees, you need to negotiate a date as to when the homework will be submitted and you need to submit the form to the SDOE office.  The other option is to Withdraw from the course using a Change of Enrollment form.  When you withdraw, your transcript will show the grade “W” and your tuition is forfeit.

Links to the Credit Card Billing Authorization and Tuition Reimbursement forms are to the left for your convenience.  Tuition is due at the time you enroll, unless other arrangements have been made between your employer and Stevens for direct payment.  Any questions about these forms can be addressed by the SDOE Program staff.

Students should communicate with their advisor to develop a study plan to coordinate electives and the project versus the thesis.  The goal is to match the student’s background, experience and interest while satisfying the degree requirements.

Before you finish your fourth course or within one year of your admittance to the master’s program, you need to develop a Study Plan and have it approved by your advisor.  You may propose a customized track of electives with at least two from the SEEM/SDOE curriculum.  You may change your Study Plan at any time with your advisor’s approval.  Please send a copy of the approved study plan to the SDOE Program staff.

Student who have taken graduate level courses, have received a B or better grade, and have not used the courses toward another degree, may be able to transfer those courses toward the Systems Engineering degree.  Students should discuss this option with their advisor when developing their Study Plan.  The SDOE Program office will need an official transcript from the school where the course(s) were taken and an approved Transfer Credit form .  Students may transfer up to three courses and may be asked to audit the equivalent modular course(s) that are part of the SDOE program.

The master of Engineering degree can be completed in two years or less through the unique Modular Delivery format and/or through Online course offerings.  A maximum of 6 years is permitted to complete the degree.  Requests for extensions to the limit must be made in writing to your advisor for approval, then to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

To graduate, you need to submit an Application for Candidacy, Commencement Questionnaire and the graduation fee.  A form needs to be submitted for the degree and for each Graduate Certificate you are completing.  A good time to apply is when you enroll for the Special Problem or Thesis, which is usually your final course.  Degrees are conferred twice a year (May and January) and the Commencement Ceremony takes place only once, in May.
