Crossing the Chasm (Amazon.com) by Geoffrey A. Moore. The baseline text for marketing technology innovations. Provides a framework for understanding how the business world accepts or rejects technology. Some important ideas, tho' as with most business books, they are repeated incessantly (just in case you didn't catch them the first time, or the second time, or ...).
The Innovator's Dilemma (Amazon.com) by Clayton M. Christensen. More of a theory book, about what types of technologies disrupt the market instead of simply growing the market. Useful in thinking about when to license to existing corporations vs. setting up a newco, as well as insights into choosing an entry point and positioning for new technology. Warning: this is an academic work. You'll be disappointed if you're looking for "how to make $$ in just minutes a day." (for that, see below;-)
Millions from the Mind (Amazon.com) by Alan R. Tripp.Despite its money-grubbing title, this is a good learn-by-example text for technology licensing. Lots of anecdotal stories, too lightly sketched to be called case studies, but nevertheless instructive. Includes a chapter for evaluating the likelihood of licensing a technology, and how to improve a technology's chances of being licensed.
Lessons (Amazon.com) by An Wang The founder of Wang Computer (an extremely successful company before its demise due to a leadership transition) writes about his own experiences as a researcher at Harvard who wanted to make his research "real." The inventor of magnetic core memory describes the gradual growth of a company that grew from strength to strength. Lessons from a kinder, gentler era of non-VC funded company building.
