CONCEPT CLASSIFICATION:
There are many ways to approach any given problem. Many different designs can be used to accomplish a given goal. Engineering is the discipline of finding a design that executes the assigned task economically, safely, and efficiently. Based on the literature research that was performed, different types of products were found that performed the function of assisting individuals in opening medication containers. These devices did not provide a complete automatic solution to opening the containers. However, they did provide insight on the different types of mechanisms that can be incorporated into the design.
The approach to the selection of designs requires an analysis of the various components of the product. Components such as power transmission, controls, motion devices, mobility, and machine body type need to be evaluated to determine the various solutions available, and which of those solutions best fits the projects requirements. Concept classification trees were created to show the possible choices that can be utilized. Based on brainstorming sessions and discussions, the concept classification trees were used to determine the best possible solution for each type of function or component. The classification concept trees, shown below, illustrate the concepts that the team desired to pursue during the design process.
Taking the mobility of the device as an example to illustrate the selection of design approaches, the team analyzed the different types of mobile possibilities, which were determined to be handheld, countertop, or fixed. The team decided that it would be best to focus the possible designs on being either handheld or countertop. A fixed device was excluded from any future design possibilities. By doing so, the team narrows the goal of the project, and the designs that are generated during the design process are more focused.
A very important factor that was taken into consideration during the selection of design approaches was the safety associated with the machine. A major component that was affected by the safety was the body type that was chosen. After careful analysis and deliberation, the team excluded semi-rigid and flexible body types. These types of body types would have exposed moving parts, which is a safety concern. There is a possibility that the end-user can be accidentally injured by the moving parts. For safety concerns, flexible and semi-rigid body types were excluded.
