An introduction is provided to the important engineering properties of materials, to the scientific understanding of those properties and to the methods of controlling them. This is provided in the context of the processing of materials to produce products.
This course includes both experimentation and open-ended design problems that are integrated with the Materials Processing course taught concurrently. Core design themes are further developed.
An introduction to the macroscopic theory of mechanical behavior. Topics include: concept of tensor stress and strain tensor, principal stresses, stress strain relations, anisotropic elastic constants, the dislocation stress field, yield and flow stress criteria, fracture, fatigue, viscoelasticity and creep.
A lecture and laboratory course that introduces basic concepts in the design and operation of transmission electron microscopes and scanning electron microscopes as well as the fundamental aspects of image interpretation and diffraction analysis. Topics include: electron sources, electron optics, kinematic and dynamic theory of electron diffraction, and spectroscopic analysis.
A typical textbook is Goodhew and Humphreys, Electron Microscopy and Analysis.
MT 650:Special Topics in Materials Science and Engineering
Selected topics in surface modification and coatings technology, such as chem-ical vapor deposition, physical vapor deposition, ion implantation or other. Description of the processing techniques, characterization and performance evaluation of the surfaces.
Research & Education
Research
Libera's research centers on the development, implementation, and application of advanced electron-optical techniques to the measurement and control of microstructure and morphology in engineering materials at high spatial resolution. He studies polymer morphology and polymer interfaces using transmission electron holography and spatially resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in multi-component systems such as block copolymers, polymer blends, and composites.
One current emphasis area centers on the quantitative mapping of water in hydrated polymers and tissue using cryo-TEM coupled with spatially resolved EELS. The field-emission TEM and SEM tools at Stevens are being used to both study the physics of electron-polymer interactions as well as pattern polymers on surfaces using electron-beam lithography. The general interest is in creating bioactive surfaces to control protein adsorption and cell adhesion phenomena relevant to biomaterials and tissue engineering applications.
