Mathematical Sciences - Undergraduate Programs

Mathematics is an essential part of science and engineering, as well as being a fascinating field in its own right. Scientific and engineering problems have often inspired new developments in mathematics, and, conversely, mathematical results have frequently had an impact on business, engineering, the sciences, and technology.

The primary undergraduate program in the department is the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.  This program offers a broad background appropriate for students planning to pursue a job in industry, while also offering students the depth and rigor required for graduate studies in mathematics or related fields.   Follow this link to see the recommended study plan for the B.S. in Mathematical Sciences

Interdisciplinary Program in Computational Science

For students whose interest in mathematics is in its application to science and engineering, and with an interest in developing strong computing and programming skills, Stevens offers a Bachelor of Science in Computational Science. This interdisiplinary program provides the student with a strong grounding in applied mathematics and computer science. The program requires the student to take several courses in an approved application area, culminating in a significant computational project in the senior year. Minor in Mathematics

A minor in mathematics can be a valuable qualification for students concentrating in other fields of science and engineering.  Successful completion of a minor program is recognized on the transcript and with a Minor Certificate at graduation.  A student wishing to pursue a minor in mathematics must complete a Minor Program Study Plan signed by the department's minor advisor.  A complete description of the minor requirements is included below.

Required courses for a Minor in Mathematics:

The following are prerequisites needed to undertake the minor program:

General requirements for minor programs in engineering or science:

  • Entry to a minor program requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
  • A student wishing to pursue a minor program must complete a Minor Program Study Plan signed by a Minor Advisor from the relevant discipline.  Each minor requires a separate study plan and a student can earn no more than two minors in engineering and science.
  • The minor program must be in a discipline other than that of a student’s major program of study.  As such, minors are distinguished from options within the major discipline or concentrations within the chosen Major Program.
  • The minor program will consist of a coherent sequence of at least six courses.  A minimum of two courses (minimum six credits) must be in addition to those courses required to complete a student’s major degree program (which includes general education courses).
  • In order for a course to count towards a minor, a grade of C or above must be achieved.  At the discretion of the Minor Advisor, transfer credits may be applied to a minor, but these must constitute fewer than half of those applied to the minor program.
  • To receive the minor at graduation, the student must complete a Minor Candidacy Form signed by the Minor Advisor after all minor requirements are fulfilled.

Graduation Requirements

The following are requirements for graduation of all science and engineering students and do not carry academic credit. They will appear on the student record as pass/fail.

Physical Education Requirement

This requirement applies to all Engineering and Science Undergraduates entering Stevens in fall 2008 (Class of 2012) and later.  See the Academic Catalog for requirements in previous years.

All engineering and science students must complete a minimum of four semester credits of Physical Education (P.E.) one of which is P.E. 100, Introduction to Wellness and Physical Education.   A large number of activities are offered in lifetime, team, and wellness areas.  Students must complete P.E. 100 in their first or second semester at Stevens; the other three courses must be completed by the end of the sixth semester.  Students can enroll in more than the minimum required P.E. courses for graduation and are encouraged to do so.

Participation in varsity sports can be used to satisfy up to three credits of the P.E. requirement, but not the P.E. 100 requirement.

Participation in supervised, competitive club sports can be used to satisfy up to two credits of the P.E. requirement, but not the P.E. 100 requirement, with approval from the P.E. Coordinator.

English Language Proficiency

All students must satisfy an English Language proficiency requirement.
