LABORATORY SAFETY
This lab has opportunities for injury if proper care is not taken and common sense used. Several pieces of equipment, especially the rolling mill, have the potential to catch loose clothing or hair if these are not kept away and the same for fingers. There will be some liquids used that are dilute acidic or basic so must be handled correctly and in the event of a spill it is desirable to not have open footwear. Molten tin alloys and heating equipment can cause burns so appropriate protection must be worn and procedures used when handling these items.
The laboratory exercises are not unsafe unless the students and staff make them so. Please exercise caution in this laboratory.
Importantly, all students and staff should wear: 1. Covered shoes (no sandals) 2. Long trousers/pants such as jeans (not shorts, skirts, dresses) 3. No dangling jewelry/ties and long hair tied back.
Safety equipment, such a safety glasses, must be worn at all times that you are instructed to by the teaching assistant.
Remember it is not just your safety that you influence but also that of the others in the laboratory who might be harmed if you do not follow procedures.
Access to the lab will be denied for violations of the dress policy |
