Brian Dunican, Michael Bertucci receive Novartis Science ScholarshipsBrian Dunican and Michael Bertucci, both seniors in the Chemical Biology Program, were selected to receive Novartis Science Scholarships. Eight state-wide scholarships are administered through the Independent College Fund of New Jersey and are given to high achieving science students who conduct independent scientific research. Mr. Dunican is currently studying the biology of the nuclear pore complex in the laboratory of Prof. Joseph Glavy. Mr. Bertucci is involved in the synthesis of Horsfiline-related anticancer compounds in the laboratory of Prof. A.K. Ganguly. For more information please contact:

Professor Hazelwood selected as the 2008 Henry Morton Distinguished Teaching ProfessorAt the Stevens Institute of Technology Convocation on Wednesday, September 3rd, Professor Vikki Hazelwood of the Department of Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and Biomedical Engineering was named as the Henry Morton Distinguished Teaching Professor for 2008. This award, made possible by the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr., Fund for Excellence, is presented to a faculty member "of exceptional teaching ability who has demonstrated a great influence on students in and/or out of the classroom. Dr. Hazelwood is Co-Director of the Biomedical Engineering Program at Stevens and is currently President and CEO of SPOC, Inc. (Stevens Proof of Concept), a company that is developing a novel medical device based on a design by Stevens undergraduate students. For more information please contact:

Prof. Sukhishvili's Research Featured at ACS 2008 The work of Department of Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and Biomedical Engineering Professor Svetlana A. Sukhishvili was featured at the 236th Annual National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. Dr. Sukhishvili delivered two invited symposium presentations entitled, “Nanoparticle-functionalized substrates and fibers for ultrasensitive SERS-based sensing” and “Control of pH response and permeability of polymer multilayer films and capsules.” These talks, in addition to five poster presentations, described Dr. Sukhishvili’s cutting edge research in nanotechnology and polymer science. Stevens co-authors on the talks and posters included Professors Henry Du and Matthew Libera, graduate students Svetlana Pavlukhina, Irem Erel Unal, Zhichen Zhu, Li Xu, Qichen Wang, and Melek Erol, and former graduate student Dr. Veronika Kozlovskaya. SPOC Inc. Product Featured in National Publication SPOC Inc., a company born from a Stevens Institute of Technology biomedical engineering senior design project, was featured in the July 28th issue of ADVANCE Magazine for Physical Therapist and PT Assistants. ADVANCE has a circulation of 85,000 physical therapy professionals nationwide. The two page article re-counted the history of SPOC (which stands for Steven’s Proof of Concept), and it’s three student founders, Jeckin Shah, Ryan Stellar, and Dan Silva. SPOC CEO and Stevens Industry Professor, Vikki Hazelwood, guided the design effort at Stevens in collaboration with Dr. Norman J. Marcus, MD, of the New York University School of Medicine. SPOC Inc.’s lead product is a muscle pain locator device that recently won Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510K clearance for manufacture and marketing as a clinical device.
