COOPERATIVE EDUCATION Program
Educating Through Real-Life Experience
"Good grades and participating in extra-curricular activities is not enough to prepare you for a career and the high expectations of industry.Through co-op, I learned how being creative is critical to solving big problems."
- David Monteiro, Undergraduate, Chemical Engineering
Students stand out of the crowd through the Stevens Co-op Program with hands-on experience at leading companies in chemical engineering. Before even completing an undergraduate degree, co-op students have worked alongside the best and brightest in the industry, with two years of paid professional experience on their resumes.
Getting the Job
Predicted median pay for chemical engineering and materials science positions include:
- Petroleum Engineering: $114,080/year
- Materials Engineering: $83,120/year
- Chemical Engineering: $90,300/year
Jobs which pay such high salaries are competitive and highly desirable. The Princeton Review recently ranked Stevens 13th in the nation for "Best Career Services" and Bloomberg Businessweek placed Stevens in the top 25 schools in the nation for best return on investment (ROI). These achievements are largely due to the exceptional co-op program in which 40 percent of the student body participates.
With the combination of classroom learning and real-world experience, students who participate in the program make compelling candidates for prospective employers. Many co-op students are offered full-time positions by their co-op employers post-graduation, with higher-than-average starting salaries. Students are able to explore the wide range of opportunities available in a chemical engineering career. Chemical engineering co-op students work in many areas of the field from biotechnology to polymer and plastics engineering. The co-op program offers a five-year plan that is fully compatible with the Chemical Engineering curriculum. Over 30 percent of co-op students earn both a Master's degree and a Bachelor's degree while participating in the program.
Prominent companies that participate include BD, Colgate-Palmolive, ExxonMobil, Johnson & Johnson, and Merck.
