My research is focused on chemical modification of surfaces to render them useful for biomedical applications. In particular, I am interested using layer-by-layer assembly of polymers to create coatings capable of preventing biofilm growth and bacterial attachment.

Joined Group: Fall 2007

My research is focused on synthesis of block copolymers using controlled radical polymerization techniques and their assembly within stimuli-responsive films. I am also interested in establishing correlations among strength of interpolyelectrolyte interactions, chain dynamics (both within polyelectrolyte complexes and within multilayer films), and internal structure of layer-by-layer films.

Zhichen Zhu , Ph.D. Student

Joined Group: Fall 2007

My research includes synthesis of stimuli-responsive block copolymers with new architectures, responsive layer-by-layer assemblies for controlled drug delivery, and layered nanocomposites as mechanomutable materials.

My research interests focus on synthesis of noble (Au, Ag, Pt) metal nanoparticles with different size and shape and their application for SERS. In addition to synthesis, the goal is to understand and manipulate the surface chemistry of nanoparticles, which will allow for selective analyte detection.

Yiming Lu , Ph.D. Student

Joined Group: Fall 2008

My research is focused on synthesis and characterization of well-defined stimuli-responsive polymer brushes useful for controlling surface wettability and adhesion of bacterial and mammalian cells.
