Biomedical Engineering

Our Program

Stevens is a leader in the field of biomedical engineering, engaging in visionary research and collaborations with industry and government. Our graduate alumni are leaders in academia and industries related to biotechnology and medicine, and in other emerging fields based on biological technology. The Biomedical Engineering program is designed for either individual work or interdisciplinary collaboration among students. In the latter case, theses and other projects are managed by a team of students, each individual representing a different discipline, and contributing to the project in his or her area of strength, while sharing his or her knowledge and learning from his or her team members who contribute with their strengths. Each individual may produce his or her own thesis, extracting relevant aspects from the team project. Furthermore, a team of advisors with varying expertise are assigned to any given project, providing for sufficient depth in any discipline, while further promoting collaboration amongst the disciplines. The advisory team includes a clinician as a resource as well. For example, a project requiring that an electrical signal be delivered to a patient might incorporate, at least, a biomedical engineering student, electrical engineering student, and a student of technology management while having an advisory team consisting of an expert in each biomedical physiology, signal processing, biophysics, and also include an industry expert and a medical doctor.

Admissions Requirements

Admission to the BME Master’s degree or Graduate Certificate program requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering. Applicants with other degrees may be considered, provided there is evidence of relevant academic background or practical experiences. Students may enter the BME program prior to meeting all the prerequisites if approved by the Admissions Committee. These students must plan to complete the prerequisites during their enrollment in the program in addition to the requirements stipulated for the Master’s Degree or the Graduate Certificate, respectfully. Individual courses are also open to all interested students not in the BME program.

Acceptance to the BME program is contingent upon successful review of an applicant’s application by the participating department of disciplinary focus. Interested applicants should contact the corresponding program coordinators for general admissions requirements (e.g., GRE, TOEFL, GPA) in individual departments.

Program Requirements

To obtain a Graduate Certificate, a student must complete 12 credits (four courses). This requirement is to be satisfied with the four common core courses; Biomaterials, Biomechanics, Physiological Systems, and Medical Instrumentation and Imaging. These courses can be used to satisfy the Master’s degree requirement after the certificate program.

To earn a Master’s in the BME program, a student must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 30 credits of graduate study beyond the bachelor’s degree. Specifically, the student will complete the required courses in BME, a research or special project, and a guided selection of technical electives.

All courses in the Master’s degree and the Graduate Certificate Program in BME are regular graduate courses, are offered on campus.

A Graduate Certificate in BME can be offered at off-campus locations if a sufficient number of students register at a particular off-campus site. Off-Campus locations are currently under development. 

The program is being expanded to accommodate on-line courses.
