Enrolling in the Program

Admission to the program is through the admissions efforts of NYU's College of Arts and Science and is highly selective. Applications are considered carefully, and a number of factors are given weight: academic record, standardized test scores, recommendations, and essay. In addition to the specifics of high-school record, character and potential for success are taken into account in an attempt at building a total picture of applicants.

All freshman entering the program apply to NYU and are required to take either the College Entrance Examination Board Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I) or the American College Test (ACT). It is recommended that freshman applicants also submit scores from three SAT II Subject Tests, preferably from the Writing examination and any other two examinations. It is expected that students will be prepared to take Calculus I as a freshman. For entrance in the fall term as a freshman, admission applications - including all supporting credentials - must be received by January 15, or by November 15 for Early Decision applicants.

Most new freshmen are admitted to the program as a part of admission to the NYU College of Arts and Sciences, An appreciable number of students (ten to fifteen per year, on the average) are accepted into the program after admission at the time of summer orientation. Roughly another ten, including transfers to the College, are admitted during the year following summer orientation. In any of the paths, a chief requirement for admission is readiness to take calculus, as evidenced by high school records and/or SAT math scores.

Financial Aid

NYU and Stevens will do everything they can to make it financially possible for students to participate in the dual degree program. Initially, financial aid is handled through New York University's normal admissions process. At Stevens for the last two years, institutional and NY state financial aid received at NYU is carried forward at Stevens. If the aid is need-based and there has been a significant change in the family's financial circumstances, fluctuations in eligibility may occur.

At NYU, student normally pay a "flat" tuition rate for a course load of 12 to 18 credits a term, but must pay extra for each credit above 18. Because their schedules routinely call for more than 18 credits a term, students enrolled in the program are exempted from these additional charges: even when enrolled for more than 18 credits, they pay only the flat rate. In order to ensure that they will be ready for the courses at Stevens in the fourth and fifth year, students may take after their first, second, or third year up to four approved summer courses at Stevens, without charge.

'Although my strengths lie in math and science, I also love playing classical piano and taking pictures. It was important to me that I not limit my options by attending an engineering school without a firm foundation in the liberal arts. At NYU, I can still explore my artistic side by taking courses in music and photography.'
