At the heart of our activities is the development and sustainment of an educational environment that prepares our graduates to become leaders in the global economy of the future. Inventiveness, creativity and entrepreneurship, as well as an understanding of the forces that shape the global economy, are among the prevailing principles of that environment. International outreach through partnerships with other academic institutions and multi-national companies and industries are expanding our global footprint and making an impact on engineering education worldwide. A four year collaboration has just begun between Areté Associates of Arlington, Virginia and Stevens. Areté is an advanced science and engineering company that provides innovative solutions to the most challenging technical problems faced by the United States Defense and Intelligence agencies. The company is working with Stevens with funding provided by DARPA to develop reliable forecasting systems for rivers, estuaries, harbors and nearby coastal regions that accurately describes the environment, in particular, the currents and water levels.
Recent work at Stevens has shown that currents predicted via mathematical models are very sensitive to uncertainties in bottom topography (or bathymetry) and that bathymetry is a major factor in determining the flow field in these bodies of water, and therefore in the conduct of surface and underwater maritime activities. It is, however, inaccurately known in many regions. Advances by Areté in remotely measuring surface and near surface currents suggest that accurate realizations of these currents, especially on tidal time scales, may be possible. Given that dependable hydrodynamic models of rivers, estuaries, harbors and coastal oceans exist today at Stevens, it may then also be possible to deduce the bottom topography of a region using remotely-derived sets of currents that have some known level of accuracy. By a judicious blend of remotely sensed surface currents and an appropriate forecast model, Areté and Stevens hope to significantly improve forecasts in rivers, estuaries and harbors. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Northrop Grumman Corporation- Airborne Early Warning and Electronic Warfare Systems and Stevens’ System Design and Operational Effectiveness Program (SDOE) to provide for an exclusive Master of Engineering in Systems Engineering, administered and delivered by SDOE to the employees of Northrop Grumman. Lockheed Martin and Stevens have a diversity of research and educational relationships with a number of business units within the corporation.
Including collaborations through the Atlantic Center and the Maritime Security Laboratory. Boeing and the SDOE program of the Schaefer School of Engineering at Stevens have an understanding with regard to the delivery of tailored executive courses in systems engineering and architecting. The SDOE Program is the provider of all systems engineering related education and training offerings within IBM Global Services worldwide. The SDOE Program of the Schaefer School of Engineering provides web-based and live systems engineering courses at a variety of ITT Industries' locations across the United States.
NOKIA (Finland) and Stevens Institute of Technology have a diversity of research and educational relationships in the area of systems engineering, architecting, and systems thinking. | General Dynamics (Burlington, VT)
The SDOE Program at Stevens offers a variety of courses as part of an on-site Masters degree program in systems engineering at the General Dynamics facility in Burlington, VT. | Syntell, AB (Sweden) & Strategy Bridge International
Syntell, AB (Sweden), Strategy Bridge International, and Stevens Institute of Technology are collaborating on the organization and execution of the Scandinavian Summer School Series and the Mediterranean Winter School Series.
