Next Generation Mobile Services: Infrastructure and ApplicationsDr. Shoshana Loeb Executive Director: Telcordia Technologies (with Ben Falchuk, PhD and Thimios Panagos, PhD for Demo and discussion) Abstract The vision of user centric intelligent telecommunications services that adapt to user activities, needs and schedules is now becoming a reality as mobile services are entering the market place at an accelerated pace. From location sensitive information services to social networking to remote healthcare and mobile car diagnostic, the richness of new offering signifies a new era in technology as it serves the needs of individuals and society. Although the decades' old vision is now materializing, we are still facing a number of fundamental technical challenges in several software areas which need to be understood in order for mobile services to achieve the scale, scope, and agility required to make them both relevant and successful. The talk will focus on and demonstrate some of the innovations that can enable the next generation of intelligent mobile services. Speaker Bio Shoshana Loeb, Ph.D., is an executive, a leader, a researcher, an inventor and an entrepreneur with a proven track record in creating disruptive technologies, and operating and growing innovative technology organizations and businesses.
Currently, she is a Chief Scientist and an Executive Director in the Applied Research organization at Telcordia Technologies in Piscataway, NJ, leading efforts focused on the creation of new market-driven products and services for next generation universal services platforms (4G, 5G and 6G services), mobile phone applications including location based services, social networking, navigation services, Telematics application and Tele-health as well as media and video based cell phone applications that address the long-tail of e-commerce, and the development of new business opportunities and innovative business models for commercialization.
In 2004-2005 Dr. Loeb was an Executive in Residence with Murex Investments, an early stage venture capital firm. Her contribution was in identifying and evaluating new investment opportunities in high tech products and services companies, developing portfolio management models, providing strategic operational assistance to the portfolio, and managing investments as a member of the board.
In 1999, Dr. Loeb founded Elity Systems and transitioned the company from an early stage company to a focused thriving business. The company developed and built a very high speed temporal event triggering software product and quickly acquired market share with marquee customers such as Fidelity Investments, Staples and SunTrust. She raised $17M in two over-subscribed rounds of financing and worked with the Board through several leadership changes. As a Chief Executive Officer of the company, she directed Elity through particularly challenging economic times in IT to deliver both sustainable financial results and a company that is recognized as a world-class leader in its market space. The company was purchased by MarketSoft in August of 2004 which was subsequently purchased by Unica (UNCA), a leader in enterprise marketing management software and solutions. The Elity product has continued its accelerated market penetration gaining significant market share in the event driven marketing market.
Previously, Dr. Loeb had a successful career at Bell Communications Research (Bellcore, now Telcordia Technologies). At Bellcore she served as the Executive Director of the Internet/Information Technology business unit. Her organization invested in, developed and deployed innovative technologies in all areas of next generation telecommunication networks, network evolution, Internet services, wireless applications, and security technologies. She also developed new business concepts for the company and launched other lines of business and a business unit to commercialize new technologies and extend competitive advantage to legacy product lines. Her customers included internal product and consulting groups, and the regional phone companies including Bell South, Pacific Bell, and South Western Bell.
Dr. Loeb holds a B.Sc. in Physical Chemistry from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel, a M.Sc. in Chemical Physics, and an award-winning Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from The Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. She held a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at Yale University and was a Computer Science Professor at the State University of New York, where she received several NSF and DoT grants and contracts. Dr. Loeb has completed several Executive Training and Leadership programs at Wharton, Stanford, MIT, and Harvard Business Schools. She holds three US patents, with several patents pending, authored over fifty scientific, technical and business publications, has a new book (coauthored) on the €œFabric of Mobile Communication to be published by Wiley in early 2009, and appeared in media and industry events. She was showcased by NPR as a distinguished woman and Science and Technology. Dr. Loeb is married and lives in Philadelphia with her family. Her hobbies include long distance bike riding, predominantly for charity, and in 2004 she completed the €œRide for the Roses€ with Lance Armstrong in Austin, Texas.
