E101-102

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This primary objective of the course is to provide incoming students with an opportunity to learn more about engineering as a profession and to explore the various engineering disciplines for which programs are available at Stevens.  This is intended to assist students as they develop their interests and eventual commitment to a major field of engineering study. The course also includes other career, professional and personal development information and perspectives.

More formally we have Course Learning Outcomes for all our courses.  These map to the overall Program Learning Outcomes for the various engineering majors - in other words they help define what a Stevens graduate should know/be able to do by the time of graduation. The Program Outcomes are numbered 1 through 14 and in E101-102 we have Course Outcomes that map to Program Outcomes 11, 12 & 13. These are shown below with the relevant E101-102 course outcomes (you can view all the outcomes and the assessment process at http://www.stevens.edu/ses/academics/assessment/).

We do limited assessment of the outcomes in this course because of the way it is structured, but the other courses in the engineering programs assess outcomes through student work and through end-of-course surveys that ask the student about their perceived learning of the outcomes - so you the student play an important part in assessing and improving the courses and programs at Stevens.

E101-102 Course Learning Outcomes and Relation to Engineering Program Outcomes

Program Outcome 11: (Ethics and morals) a critical understanding of ethical and moral systems in a social context

  • Course Outcome 11.1: can describe how ethics has significance in the  engineering context

Program Outcome 12: (Social issues) an understanding of contemporary social issues including the interaction of technology with society, as well as an appreciation of diversity and pluralism

  • Course Outcome 12.1:  can describe how globalization has and will have an impact on engineering

  • Course Outcome 12.2: has learned about engineering fields and careers in order to make an informed choice of a program of study.

Program Outcome 13: (Lifelong learning) a recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in lifelong learning and development

  • Course Outcome 13.1: has learned how to utilize library resources to do research on an engineering topic

COURSE FORMAT

The course is split over the two semesters of the Freshman Year as E101 (Fall) and E102 (Spring) with a total of one credit awarded for completion of a minimum of TWELVE experiences over the two semesters.  However, you need to complete a minimum of SIX events by the end of the Fall semester. We encourage you to take advantage of what is offered to do more than the minimum. This course is graded PASS/FAIL. A minimum of SIX events (including the compulsory events) are needed for successful completion of E101. Although E101 in the Fall is zero credit it will be on the transcript and the grade of PASS or Fail is applied depending if the requirements have been met.  At the end of the Spring semester for E102 you will also receive a grade of PASS or FAIL for one credit and this will be based on having completed a minimum of 12 events over the two semesters, including all the compulsory events.

The course is offered in a flexible mode such that each student can register for those experiences that interest him/her by selecting from a list offered during the semester.  It should be noted however that a limited number of events are compulsory.

Please note both the Library Orientation and Physical Education & Wellness Orientation are compulsory events but are offered multiple times (Library over both semesters) so you can choose to take one as it suits you - but do not leave it too late as there may not be an open slot! There will be no make-up sessions offered, so please attend the session for which you have registered.

Two of the compulsory events, Globalization and International Experiences are offered only in one week in the Fall, the Ethics event is offered only in one week during the Spring so do not miss these.

You are pre-registered in the E101-102 database for all compulsory events except for the Phys. Ed. and the Library Orientations for which you register online just like you do for non-compulsory events using the registration site that is linked from this webpage.

Each experience is listed with a date, time, duration and location.  Not all experiences are offered in the scheduled day/time slot for E101 – 102 as there may be logistical reasons to run them at other times, such as for an off-campus trip or because the experience requires more than an hour.

It is important that you SIGN THE ATTENDANCE LIST at each event in order to get credit. Credit cannot be given retroactively. Attendance will be taken at each event.  The signed attendance sheet is the only evidence that will be used to give credit for an event.

The registration process allows a student to express interest in an experience for which they are unable to register because it has reached the cap.  In this way a repeat may be arranged if there is sufficient interest.  The repeat may be offered either in the same semester for the Fall or in the second semester.   Therefore students should check the offerings on a regular basis as they may be revised to reflect interest.

STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY URGED TO SPREAD THEIR EXPERIENCES AND NOT POSTPONE REGISTERING UNTIL LATER IN THE SEMESTER AS THEY MAY BE UNABLE TO COMPLETE THE REQUIREMENTS AT THAT TIME

If you register for an event then you are expected to attend. If you know ahead of time that you cannot attend for a good reason then you can unregister in the same way that you registered. "No shows" steal available places at events from others who might wish to register, especially when there is a cap on the number who can be accomodated.

A record will be kept in the database of those students not attending events for which they are registered and event credit penalties may be applied.
