SENSE: Stevens Excercise in Network Security Enhancement
Sense Logo

What is SENSE?

SENSE is a competition designed by students to get other students interested and working in a network security environment. By doing this, we hope to establish a sandbox (testing ground)for cybersecurity research. Through this competition, we hope to foster a sense of competition in students which will aid them in devloping vital skills and expertise in network security.

Okay, but what will students be doing?

This fall's competition is set up as a race to the finish.  Teams are formed and each will try to control the server machine first.  First team to the end, or the team who has collected the most points at the end of the competition, wins.  The competition will begin Wednesday September 12th at 1:00pm, at which time you will be contacted with your target, and further instructions.  The competition will end Monday at noon if no one has won by then.

Are there any rules or requirements?

The only requirement is a computer, Steven's issued laptops should do.  A basic knowledge of C coding (or C++) will be necessary for your participation, each team should include at least one person who is familiar with C to the point of being able to find flaws, and one person familiar with linux or BSD (Most of the competition will be run in a *nix setting.)

There are only 4 rules, the rest of the contest will be handled via a group of judges.

    RULES:
  1. The server functions of the machine must always be functional.
  2. The network must maintain basic functionality, anything deemed to be a denial of service or some other clog that interferes with the game, will be put a stopto.
  3. The teams are not allowed to attack each other, this isn't politics, you win by having the skills to finish, not destroying your opponents.
  4. Clean up after yourself, the idea is to get in, take over, and not be noticed.  Clean up your tracks, a small penalty will be taken away if we come on later and see your fingerprints all over.  This penalty may not be much, but if it comes down to the wire, those few points may make all the difference.

Sounds Awesome! How do I sign up?

This year we sadly only have the equipment for four teams.  Teams should have approx. four members each.  In order to sign up each team member has to e-mail rmarone@stevens.edu with the names and stevens emails of your teams' members, and an awesome name.  Once I have all the members' e-mails, your team comes in at the time of your slowest persons reply.  Teams will be added to the competition on a first come first serve basis until full, at which point this section of the site will be removed.  You may sign up as an individual, in which case you may participate if a team needs another member at any point in time, either they signed up with 3, or some team has a falling out.

To reiterate, to join e-mail me (rmarone@stevens.edu):

  • Your name
  • The names of the rest of the team
  • Stevens e-mails for all of your teams members
  • A team name

We want to use the resources we have for you guys, so full teams take precedence over non-full ones.  Trying the maximize the scope of the competition.  Good luck everyone!
