Music Audition Guidelines for Ensemble

  • Have appropriate audition material prepared. Beauty and the Beast is written in a mixture of the classic Broadway and operetta styles, so try to avoid material from rock shows, modern through-composed pop shows such as Les Miserables or Miss Saigon, stand-alone pop or rock songs, etc. Best to sing music from shows from the "classic" era (including shows such as those written by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe etc), other Alan Menken material or the like, operettas, etc. Do not sing songs from Beauty and the Beast unless requests to do so on callback. That said, it is always best to audition with material with which you are most comfortable, so allowances will be made based on that.
  • Make sure your music is in easily playable form for the pianist. That means making sure the music pages are not stapled together, but rather taped "accordion-style" – meaning that it can open up on the piano desk. If the music is in a book, make sure the book will stay open on its own. Have a full accompaniment written out, and not just a lyric sheet with chords. Be certain that the music is written out in the correct key for you and that it is legible. It is recommended to have a musician take a look at the music to make certain of this, and to be sure sections of the accompaniment are not cut off, if it is a photocopy. Remember, if the pianist is not sure of what he or she is playing, you won't sound good.
  • Try to have multiple songs prepared and available. Up-tempo is generally preferred to a slow ballad. Ladies should have two songs prepared at very least: one that shows off the belt (chest voice), and one in legit style (head voice). Men should have at least an up-tempo and power ballad prepared. Be prepared to sing the entire song if asked, but songs should initially be presented as cut-down versions of approximately 16 or 32 bars.
  • Choose something that shows off your personality, as well as your high notes. Feel free to change end notes to show off a high note, etc. If the material you sing does not show your top notes, you might be asked to vocalize up with scales and arpeggios. Songs for auditions must be memorized. We are looking for more than just good voices… you must act the songs as well, and if your head is buried in music, you won't be able to do this.
  • Don't forget to breathe! Once you're in the room, take your time and make sure everything is right for you. We want you to succeed!
