Frank Xu, Assistant Professor of Civil Environmental & Ocean Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology, has been named an Early Career Principal Investigator, a highly competitive and prestigious award from the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research of the Office of Science, US Department of Energy (DOE).

I am thrilled to see Frank's hard work pay off so soon in his short time at Stevens, said Director of the CEOE Department, Alan Blumberg.

The award is really a surprise to me. I am happy that in the next three years, I can do something that is both important and that I enjoy. To me, that is essential for genuine research, said Xu. I would like to thank [Dean of Engineering] George Korfiatis, Alan Blumberg, my other colleagues and the Office of Sponsored Research for their help in obtainingthis award.

The overall objective of the DOE program is to stimulate academic research in scientific areas of interest to ASCR programs, especially among faculty who are in the early stages of their academic profession. The award of approximately $300,000 will provide support for Xu and a Ph.D. candidate for three years. Their research effort will develop multi-scale stochastic numerical methods for solving stochastic partial differential equations which involve multi-scale stochastic data. The methods will allow for the prediction of uncertainty propagation across many dynamical scales.
