Professor Frank Fisher leads Stevens Team Awarded $200K from the National Science Foundation (NSF)An interdisciplinary team of Stevens faculty conducting research in various areas of nanotechnology (Fisher, Pochiraju, Shi in Mechanical Engineering; Libera, Du in CBME, and Sukhishvili in Chemistry and Chemical Biology), the Visual Information Environment Lab directed by Hong Man in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Center for Innovation in Engineering & Science Education (CIESE) has been awarded $200k over two years to develop Virtual Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Nanotechnology (VREUN) modules. These self-contained multimedia learning modules will be based on video documentation of undergraduate nanotechnology research projects performed in the labs of the nanotechnology faculty and designed for use within undergraduate science and engineering curricula. Couched in the Stevens culture of TechnogenesisTM, each module will present the nanoscale phenomena being investigated, key research questions related to the projects and how these questions are being addressed in the lab, and how this understanding is necessary for ultimate marketplace realization of the nanotechnology. The goal of the educational modules will be to introduce students to nanotechnology concepts in the context of active nanotechnology research being done at Stevens.
