Yong ShiBack

Dr. Shi’s research involves; Active nanostructures such as nanofibers, nanotubes and nanojunctions, Mechanical, thermal, solar and chemical energy scavenging, Novel actuation and sensing technologies for biomedical and structural health monitoring applications, Power, Biomedical, RF and optical EMS/NEMS design and fabrication and Experimental micro/nano mechanics & electromechanical coupling.

He is the head of the Active Nanomaterials and Devices Lab, and focuses the research efforts on interests on the design, fabrication, characterization and applications of various active nanostructures such as nanofibers, nanotubes, nanojunctions and nanotrees.

Dr. Shi was recently awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation for his project, “MEMS Umbrella-Shaped Actuator with Active Structure for Medical Applications.” The objective of the research is to design, fabricate and test an umbrella-shaped micro-actuator based on an integrated micro/nanofabrication technique for thrombus retrieval in stroke therapy.

He has been awarded a patent; US-2009-0056094-A1, “Piezoelectric nanofibers, nanotubes, nanojunctions and nanotrees", is involved with professional societies such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), IEEE, Materials Research Society (MRS), and Sigma Xi, and has been recipient of 2007 ANST fellowships, Best young researcher award, the Chinese Academy of Space Technology, P. R. China, 1993, and an R&D award from the National defense science and technology committee, “Development of solar panel substrate and yoke for China-Bazil earth resources satellite,” P.R. China, 1998.
