Research

Creative and entrepreneurial research is an integral part of the Stevens mission.  Bulding Communities for Research in focused areas has been a top priority of the Institute Strategic Plan and the Office of the Provost. Such communities are bound by a common purpose to achieve something distinctive, cross over departmental, and school boundaries and are the cornerstone of the extended research entrprise, supported as a top institutional priority.  The fundamental principles governing the research environment at Stevens are Invetiveness, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (ICE).  Technogenesis, the learning environment practiced at Stevens, involves students, faculty and colleagues from governement and industry  working together from invention to market realization of technology. The Office of the Provost provides incentives, support and encouragement in building and sustaining cross disciplinary clusters within such communities. The building blocks of research communities are:

  • Deep understanding of areas of primary national importance that transcend time (15-25 years)
  • Development of clusters with star faculty core expertise in selected areas
  • Connectivity of clusters within a CFR such that distinctive, nationally visible impact is made in the chosen area
  • Holistic strategy to making a distinctive impact that goes beyond disciplinary research
  • Agility to adopt to changing situations without loosing focus and determination
  • Deep understanding of key issues throughout all constituencies of the Stevens enterprise to facilitate a top-down and bottom-up architecture
  • ‘Top Priority’ support from administration and research-active faculty leadership
  • Administrative/operational infrastructure that is commensurate to the magnitude of the task
