Dr. Mitola, Founder of Cognitive Radio, Addresses International Conference on Radio Frequency Measurements Technology

Dr. Joseph Mitlola Vice President of Research at Stevens Institute of Technology provided the keynote address at the Swedish conference on RF Measurements Technology (RFMT). Director Jens Zander, Professor at KTH, The Royal Institute of Technology, introduced Distinguished Professor Joe Mitola as the opening keynote.

Dr. Mitola provided an overview of how Stevens' systems engineering research applied to RF measurements technologies shows a rapidly growing need for bringing the instrumentation laboratory to the field, particularly for calibrating television (TV) whitespace for cognitive radios under the federal communications rule and order (R&O) of Nov 2008 that mandates a TV whitespace spectrum occupancy database.  Field autocalibration would revolutionize the radio environment mapping problem, making it easier for radio, radar, navigation and other critical uses of radio spectrum to share spectrum more smoothly and efficiently.

"We are entering an era of engineered cognitive components and cognition-centric systems," Dr. Mitola explained.  "Therefore, high fidelity calibration in field environments and in real time would extend the value of the RF measurements community and could become a critical enabler for reducing cost and improving value to commercial, military, first responders, and other stakeholders."

He added that Gävle's strong local educational systems, strategic relationship with KTH, The Royal Institute of Technology and Dr. Mitola's alma mater, and with Ericsson constitute one of the worlds top centers in RF measurements and instrumentation technology and a great partner for Stevens rapidly growing Research Enterprise.
