Systems Development & Maturity Laboratory (SD&ML) awarded third NPS grant to further research in Systems Earned Readiness Management

Drs. Brian Sauser and Jose Ramirez-Marquez of the Systems Development & Maturity Laboratory (SD&ML) in the School of Systems & Enterprises at Stevens Institute of Technology have been awarded a third consecutive grant through the Naval Postgraduate School’s Defense Acquisition Research Program in order to further their research in systems earned readiness management.  This funding will allow for the enhancement of fundamental capabilities of assessing system maturity already developed by the SD&ML in order to address some recurring issues to its application.  That is, a system has variants in its physical architecture that realize certain functionality and capability by which trade-off decisions are made to find a solution for a deployable system. The fundamental question to be answered is, “What are the effects of necessary trade-offs in functionality, capability, cost, schedule, and maturity, that will allow the acquisition of a system that can still satisfy a warfighter’s needs?”  The end product will be an enhanced quantitative system maturity metric and supporting methodology that will facilitate more informed acquisition decisions that can reduce risk in acquiring systems with immature components and subsystems.

Other recent accomplishments of the SD&ML include a contract by Northrop Grumman Corporation for research on the development of systems maturity model guidance, and funding by the FAA for research to be conducted by Dr. David Nowicki and Dr. Ramirez-Marquez on radio obsolescence and sustainability - an economic model for evaluation.

These awards are further evidence of the value that Professors Sauser, Ramirez-Marquez and Nowicki's work through the Systems Development & Maturity Laboratory, provides to the government in the critical area of systems acquisition.  It is through these partnerships that we can work together to effectively transition research results into practice, to the benefit of all,” said Dr. Jon Wade, Associate Dean of Research and Distinguished Research Professor.
